Paradise

Maya never imagined meeting her half-sister this way under such circumstances. She had never bothered investigating Vivek Bajaj's family, thinking it better remained distant. But destiny had other plans, forcing her down an unexpected path.

“Adira is Vivek's spoilt, rebellious child,” Ranveer explained. “She's always been rough and defiant.”

“How does she know you?” Maya interrupted, skeptical. “I doubt you and my father had any cordial connection. So how is Adira so informed about us?”

Ranveer fell silent. “She's always been like that,” he muttered evasively.

“How do you know?” Maya pressed. “Did you date her? Is she an ex?”

“No,” Ranveer growled. “She's barely 21. Why would I date someone so young and immature?”

Maya felt an unexpected rush of relief that he had never been involved with Adira. At least that complication was avoided. But their connection still puzzled her. She needed the full story.

“What is her picture doing in this envelope which the detective gave you? What has Adira to do with my accident?” she further asked.

Ranveer inhaled deeply, recalling what Mr. Patel told him about Adira’s connection with the accident when he was here. As Adira had met Maya personally now and tried to warn her too, it was better he shared everything with her.

“Remember the detective asked you about some unknown number which you got a call from just a few hours before the accident?” he asked.

Maya shook her head.

“Yes.”

“That number belongs to Adira.”

Maya was surprised by that revelation.

“It means she has tried to contact me before, and I never understood?”

“Mr. Patel believes she could be a suspect.”

“But why would she want to hurt me?” Maya protested. “I'm no threat to her.”

“No, but your mother is,” Ranveer pointed out.

Maya silenced, acknowledging he had a point. Adira likely resented Garima's renewed ties with their father.

“I hope it's just coincidence,” Ranveer said darkly, “or she'll be in deep trouble.”

Maya sensed the dark meaning behind his cautionary words.

“So,” she swallowed, “what are we going to do now? Aisha asked me if Adira should be followed, but I denied her.”

“Adira is a home pet. She can roam the world, but the last place to find her is at Bajaj Mansion. You don’t need to bother. I will handle this. I have to make a few calls. Excuse me.”

He was about to walk away, but Maya held his hand. It was an entirely different feeling for him, her touching him wanting to stop him from going away. He turned around and met her eyes with a lot of affection, but she didn’t show any gestures he was expecting from her.

“How do you know so much about Adira? You still didn’t tell me that.”

Her question invoked a sense of fear again in his heart, as if the reply to this would create some more distance between them. He could not afford that to happen.

“I know a lot about most of the people related to you; isn’t that enough?”

“Don’t,” she snapped. “Don’t try to confuse me.”

Ranveer smirked. He had always liked the feistiness in her.
