“I’ve got six used condoms in my trash. You can go through it and analyze my sperm count if you want. Don’t know about you but I’m not going through six packs of condoms then going out to shoot someone. That proof enough for you, chief?” SynTanner asked. Blossom gasped, shocked that he would say that to the chief of police. Something was wrong however, SynTanner wasn’t showing the level of respect to his chief that Blossom had seen him show before. It was as if he was purposefully mouthing off and that wasn’t like SynTanner.

“Stay out of trouble. If someone else dies and they’re connected to the both of you, it’s not gonna look too good for either of you,” Preston warned. He grilled them slowly before he was stomping out of SynTanner’s house.

“What in the fuck was that?!” Blossom exclaimed. “Is he going to pin murders on me?!”

“Relax yourself sweetheart. He’s not going to pin anything on you.”

“And you! I haven’t heard you mouth off to the chief like that! What’s the matter?”

“Something was off with him.”

“What do you mean?”

“The way he was asking questions. It was clear that he no longer thinks we’re innocent. But he doesn’t believe we actually did anything. He just wants us to back off the entire thing.”

“How come he didn’t just say that?” Blossom asked.

“Because we would have seen right through him. Either he’s afraid to deal with Chance because of who Chance is, or Chance has him in his back pocket.”

“You think the chief is a dirty cop?!”

“No, I just think there’s people he would rather persecute and others he would rather ignore. He’s making it clear Chance is one of those people he would rather ignore. That’s why he’s asking us his questions like that. Any normal person would drop accusations and fall back so that way the cops didn’t assume they had any dealings with illegal activity. But fuck him for that. Me and you have more important shit to deal with tonight. I was going to tell him all about it but now I’m not sure we can trust him. I think we’re just gonna have to do it alone.”

“Is it true that you can’t shoot your gun?”

“Yeah,” he sighed. “I freeze up. I’ve shot people before, but after seeing what I saw, sometimes I feel like just shooting someone isn’t the answer. Maybe there’s other ways? Shooting should be the last resort. I guess I appreciate life much more than I used to, so taking someone’s life is hard for me.” SynTanner looked at her.

“But don’t fear baby, if that psycho harms you, I will shoot his ass,” SynTanner assured her. Blossom sunk down into the couch.

“I don’t know if he’ll hurt me or not. But um—he said he was going to do something to me.”

“What didn’t you tell me?”

“He said that he’s going to make love to me. Not sure how he plans to do that without my consent, seeing that he’s so damn gung-ho about not being a rapist,” Blossom huffed. SynTanner clenched his fists.

“Yeah, he’s not touching you,” SynTanner gritted. He looked at his watch. “For him to invite me there, he’s got a fucking plan. And I feel like it’s a trap that the both of us are bound to fall into because we have no other choice,” he said.

“I guess if we fall into a trap, we just have to make it out together,” Blossom said. She motioned for him to come to her as she sat on the couch. He came without hesitation, laying his head in her lap.

“Let’s make tonight the last time we ever have to deal with Chance,” she whispered. Their fingers intertwined sealing their promise to each other. After tonight, their trouble with Chance would be over.

The drive upChance’s driveway was long and ominous. The sun was still peeking over the horizon, so the place was bathed in warm light. Still, the mansion looked like something out of doomsday. Blossom couldn’t believe she was willingly coming back to this place again. She just hoped that this time she would be leaving and nothing would be chaining her to force her back to this place.

Cutting the engine from his bike, SynTanner scanned around the mansion. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, as if no one was home. The area around them was quiet and serene. Still, after dismounting his bike, SynTanner pulled his gun from his shoulder holster. He helped Blossom off the bike and held her hand.

“What now?”

“Ssh,” SynTanner hushed her. He whipped around, looking at the nearby bushes. There was a slight breeze but he heard more than that moving the bush. Just as Blossom wanted to ask what SynTanner heard, she felt hand cover over her mouth. Her muffled scream alerted SynTanner. He whipped around in time to see someone wearing a ski mask grab Blossom from behind. However, the moment he turned around something hard and heavy whapped him across the back.

“Argh!!” he shouted in pain, falling to the ground as his back felt like it snapped in half.

“Tanner!” Blossom screamed out as whoever captured her from behind was dragging her off. They both knew that they would be set up this way but being in the situation was completely different. Even down, SynTanner aimed his gun at the masked figure. His finger trembled on the trigger.

“Not now. Please not now. Make me shoot him,” SynTanner mumbled to himself, trying to will his body to allow him to shoot the man carting away the woman he was falling for.

“I don’t think so!” The person who’d hit in in the back used a large booted foot and stepped on SynTanner’s wrist, nearly shattering the bone. Screaming, SynTanner dropped his gun.

“Master Lore is going to have his woman,” he said.

“I’m gonna kill all of you,” SynTanner grunted. The man only laughed. SynTanner looked up into his ski masked face. He was wielding a bat, turning it in his hands.

“Ready to play ball?” he asked. Before SynTanner could answer, the man began swinging the bat, landing blow for blow on SynTanner’s body.

“SynTanner!” Blossom screamed out, trying to fight her captor. Blood was already dripping down SynTanner’s forehead and he reached out to Blossom, wishing that he had the strength enough to reach her.
