“Chance has gotten me trapped in a way where it’s not obvious to other people! Deputy, the only thing I can do right now is look after myself.” SynTanner crossed his arms and sighed.

“You’re running away from me,” he whispered.

“No. I’m just choosing to take matters in my own hands. SynTanner, if I break the law then I can’t drag you down with me. You know this.”

“Break the law? Blossom what the hell are you even thinking about?”

“Just let me go,” she whispered. The last thing SynTanner wanted to do was let her go, but then if he kept pushing, she would still just run away. If he let her go, then maybe she would come back willingly.

“I don’t want to,” he replied softly. Blossom was stunned at his confession.

“But—we—don’t even know each other,” she whispered.

“Let me ask you something. And don’t fuck around and lie about it either. You’re the specialist on dating and connections.” Blossom hugged herself.

“Alright. Ask.”

“If I let you leave right now, how many times do you think about me? About us? About the kiss we shared this morning? I know I would think about it more than I care to say, but you’d be on my mind constantly,” he admitted. Blossom knew she couldn’t lie to him. What’s more, she knew she couldn’t lie to herself.

“I would think about you all the time too,” she admitted lowly.

“You’re right Blossom. We don’t know each other. But I’m pretty sure we both know and understand what we feel. I—I’m not a modest man. I can admit that. With my line of work, I’m used to having late night hookups, having sex casually with women who I’m loosely dating but not really committing myself to. That’s just been my life. I suppose I just thought it was all I needed. Blossom, I’ve never experienced the caliber of kiss with any woman that I experienced with you. And I can admit to myself that it was the best kiss of my life. It opened my eyes to something different and it made me feel different. I’m not going to ignore that. And I know simply because of that I’ll be thinking of you all the damn time. I can’t simply just let you walk away from me. Seriously.”

“I don’t want to walk away. But the chief already gave up on me because of who Chance is and what evidence he doesn’t think is there. Who’s to say you won’t give up either?”

“How can you determine that if you won’t even let me in on what happened. You know I won’t mince words. I’ll tell you the truth. Don’t just walk away from me because you don’t think I’d want to help you.” Blossom shifted uncomfortably.

“Chance kept me at his home but I wasn’t there all the time. He let me go to work, and we went out to events. Much like how we were at the bar when I slipped you the note,” she mumbled. SynTanner continued to peer at her. Curiosity was definitely raking his features.

“Why’d you let him keep doing that to you?”

“Because I saw no other option. He threatened to kill people I know. So, I just did what he said. And he built this fantasy that we were a couple and lived together and went out together. I thought that was the only way to ensure everyone’s safety. But to anyone else, it looked like me and Chance were just a happy couple. Truthfully there is no evidence of kidnapping me because he made sure I kept going to work and brought me out in public. That’s how his psychotic mind works!” SynTanner just continued to look at her.

“I promise. He kept me against my will and forced me to pretend that we were a couple. If there was any way for me to escape, I would have tried. Seeing you at the bar was me finally seeing a way to get away from him. Still, I fear that he’s going to go after the people I know. That’s why I thought I could get him arrested. Now, that’s not the case. I don’t know what else to do!” Panic was crawling up her throat again, fear that SynTanner wouldn’t believe anything she was telling him. She needed his trust because she didn’t want to leave him either, but she would do what she had to do.

“Calm down sweetheart. I believe you,” he said simply. Blossom felt as if she could fall to the ground from the suspense finally deescalating.

“Oh my god. I—I didn’t realize how much I needed you to believe me,” she gasped, clutching her chest.

“Like I’ve been telling you. When you’re with me, I will protect you.” He held his hand out.

“I won’t let you walk away. And then you may end up being kidnapped twice. Because I’ll strap you to my bike and ride away with you,” he winked. Blossom hid her face as she giggled.

“But this time I probably would enjoy being locked away in a house with you. If you think you won’t get tired of me. I can get pretty ravenous.” SynTanner raised his brows.

“Oh yeah? Is that a promise?” Blossom only smiled at him. He jerked his head towards his bike.

“Come on, girl. Let’s get out of here.” Blossom easily took his hand, feeling a part of her sing with joy at his touch. He helped her onto the back of his bike and when he climbed on, she wrapped her arms around his waist hugging him tightly. Being with him was the safest she’d felt since the night Chance had changed her life.
