I shrugged. “For me, I guess. I don’t know how or why, but there’s no doubt about my mates.”

‘We need to go. The window of time here to retrieve you is too small,’ Zilon said.

I sighed. “I need to go but promise me, please. Don’t tell anyone.”

“If they’re your mates, it isn’t right to keep you from them.” Aylia seemed to come to some kind of decision. “Your secret is safe with me. But does the school know?”

“They should. We announced it in front of the king himself.” I backed away from Aylia. “I need to go, but I’ll tell you more when I get back. I promise.”

Aylia bit her lip, her eyes flitting back and forth between Zilon and me.

“Come here.” Zilon held his hand out for me to take. I didn’t hesitate as I reached out for him. He pulled me tightly to him, half carrying me as he moved us back to the window.

“You aren’t changing into a dragon, right?”

“It’s too flashy to be a dragon. We’re going for a short flight. I promise. The others aren’t far away. But first, we’ll fall.”

“What?” But before I had a chance to say anything, we were both falling.

I swallowed a scream, focusing on Zilon’s smile instead. He seemed to find my reaction hilarious.

We fell for only a second or so before his wings whipped out, and then we were flying.

Chapter Seven

Yeah, I still didn’t like flying. The air felt nice, whipping against my face, but that looming danger never went away. I wasn’t a thrill seeker per se. And I never thought I’d hate flying, but this was too scary. At any second, Zilon could drop me.

‘You need to trust me more,’ he said through mindspeak.

‘I do.’

‘Then why are you scared?’

‘Because my stomach feels like it’s floating away from me.’

Zilon’s chest rumbled as he laughed, the wind taking away the sound of his laughter. ‘Relax. We are almost there. How are you? How are they treating you?’

‘I’m fine. Shouldn’t I be asking you guys that? Did the king try anything? Is everyone okay?’

‘We’re fine’. Zilon’s grip on me tightened. ‘They separated us completely, but not anything we can’t handle. It’s being away from you that’s hard, not as much from each other.’

‘I feel it too. Like the bond between us is pulled completely taut, ready to snap at any moment.’

‘Exactly. But it won’t break.’

‘It feels like it will,’ I admitted.

‘It won’t, Rayna.’

‘What happened in the throne room,’ I pushed. ‘Tell me the truth.’

‘The king isn’t happy. He’s determined to break the bond between us.’ Zilon spoke his words carefully, dancing around a certain topic. ‘Nothing big happened, some threats, warnings to behave, then he kicked us out.’

‘Zilon.’ I pushed into him the stubbornness I felt to make sure he knew I wasn’t going to back down. ‘Tell me the truth. I can take it.’

‘Can you when you’re barely holding back now?’ Annoyance slipped into his voice, sending a slither of warning down my spine.

He was still a dragon, and while milder than the others, he still had that Alpha vibe about him. His was quieter, more subtle.
