“Your Majesty. We are under attack,” one guard said, kneeling down with his head bowed. Two others were behind him.

“What?” the king snarled.

In a shaking voice, the guard said, “The whole city is under attack. The Fae are here.”

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Even as the distance between the king and me grew, my skin crawled. I wanted to jump into boiling hot water to rub away his touch. But all I could do was march forward as four guards escorted me back to my dorm room.

And the whole time, all the glares at me were intense. Even from the guards. Whispers kept breaking out every time I got near people. It took a moment to clear my thoughts enough, but eventually I was able to pick up on what they were saying.”

“…because of her. She brought them here…”

“What is going to happen to us now? This is all her fault.”

“That bitch brought the Fae to us. We were safe before she showed up.”

Were they all blaming me? Seriously?

One girl’s face was twisted with pure disgust when I walked by. She glared at me, so I glared back at her. Then, she spat on me. Legit spat on me. I wiped at my face as she smirked and walked away.

I tried to go after her, but the guards only shoved me forward. “Did you see what she did?” I asked them.

“Don’t care. We are only following orders, and they are to get you back to your dorm,” one of the dragon guards said. “And she isn’t wrong. An attack like this—”

“Enough, Roterk, she doesn’t need to know,” another guard snapped out.

Roterk closed his mouth, his wings bristling to let me know he didn’t like being told to shut up. The rest of the walk back was quiet, and as we reached the windows looking out over the academy and the city, I froze.

I almost expected the guards to shove me forward too, but they were frozen too as we took in what really was happening.

Dragons of all colors darkened the skies, flying around the city. Smoke rose from the city itself. Parts of the skies lit up more as magic was tossed around, and dragons dove to avoid these attacks. Then, fire lit up the sky.

It was a true battle, and it was getting closer to us.

“Keep walking.” A guard finally shoved me. “The sooner we drop you off, the sooner we can get help.”

“Just go now,” I urged.

“Orders,” another said. “Or we’d just leave you here. Now move.”

I was shoved forward again. More glares and inappropriate remarks were tossed my way. It seemed somehow it got into everyone’s head that this was all my fault. I wasn’t even sure how or why, but I had a sneaky suspicion that Coral hadn’t helped my case either. As we got closer to my dorm room, I knew the gap to escape was closing in. If all this was happening, I’d rather be with my guys. I needed to make sure they were okay.

We were coming up to a split, and there was even a huge group of students gathered there as they crowded around a window to watch the chaos. As soon as we got close enough, I threw myself into the mass, sending a confused mess of bodies falling to the ground. I managed to get out of it on the other side and tried to make a run for it, but one of the dragons was already there, yanking me back.

“Enough! Just get into your damn room,” he snarled at me.

Then, he picked me up not-so-gently and carried me the rest of the way. He practically kicked in the door and tossed me into the room. Then, he slammed it shut, leaving me locked in my dorm room.

I ran to the window, hoping I could get out, but the windows wouldn’t budge either, and my hands tingled when I touched them. They had locked those too.

I was trapped here. The city was under attack, the Fae were too close for comfort, and I was stuck without my dragons. I bit back a cry of frustration, pounding on the window briefly before leaning my head against the cool window. I tried to figure out how to get out of this mess.

I wanted my dragons.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

I yanked at my hair, trying to hold in the bubbling frustration that had made my thoughts erratic. I paced in front of the window, only able to watch the chaos unfold outside. Dragons caused a dark cloud in the sky as they fought. Fire shot across the sky every so often, and the air even in my room was heavy.
