Both Zilon and Philit’s heads whipped so hard toward Landers that I thought they were going to break their own necks. “You did what to her?”

Landers shrugged. The bastard actually shrugged, like it wasn’t a big deal. “She said she was willing to give me a shot. I just… I didn’t think.”

“You thought with your dick, that’s what you did!” I snapped at him.

“I won’t deny it. But in my defense, you said it was okay and the others caught you while you fell so I thought that was what was required.” He held his hands up, still walking toward me like he was trying to make a truce.

Damn him for making sense.

“You could have given me some warning! I should teach you—” I ended with a string of swears. By the goddess, I wanted to be mad at him, but the connection between us had snapped into place like an iron bar. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t. He was grinning like he was feeling the same thing.

That and he was a victorious, smug bastard.

“Watch your words, Rayna, or I’ll punish that sweet ass of yours.” Landers licked his lips.

Despite my anger, my ass tingled at the idea and I swore and grew wet right there. That only pissed me off more. Why was my body acting like this?

“Okay.” Philit sighed, sounding like he had a headache. “Okay. So Landers is your mate, too. Wonderful. I’m starting to realize why Dragon’s don’t escort riders through these mountains.”

“Don’t start!” I rounded on him, finger in his face. “You want me. You’re happy for the connection. You’re just too stuck in your own rules that you won’t accept it. But clearly, seeing as I have three fucking dragon mates your rules are shit, so knock it off! You said you didn’t want me, so you don’t get a say!”

Philit opened his mouth like he was going to say something, then promptly closed it.

“She’s right, Philit,” Zilon said, moving me back. “You know she’s right.”

“I don’t know. Maybe we are misunderstanding something,” Philit said. “It’s only ever been one dragon, one rider mating. This is unheard of. Maybe she didn’t really ride us?”

“I don’t know,” Landers said. “After feeling my body connect with hers like that, feeling her clench down and give me the power to breathe fire… I’d think that’d be hard to misinterpret.” He raised a challenging eyebrow as he glanced at Philit. “Unless the whole bond thing is a sham.”

“You know it isn’t,” Philit said with that same longing he got from time to time, his focus drifting to me. “We all felt it.”

I stared right back, knowing exactly what he was feeling, and as much as he wanted to reject me, he couldn’t. My frustration ebbed as something else passed through me. My whole body was getting hot, which was interesting considering it was still very cold out.

“None of this makes sense,” I moaned, taking a step away from them. I felt like I did the first time I saw them, like I needed to jump them again. “Why would they tell us one thing if it wasn’t true.”

“Stop, Rayna, you are starting to sound like that fae.” Philit was serious, but I just stared at him. We all did. He was right, I did sound like that Fae.

“No I don’t. I’m not rambling endlessly about their king wanting to rape me.” It was true, even if I knew I was deflecting. The Fae had talked enough about all the ways the King had lied to us, I guess some of it had stuck.

“Well, if we want answers, we need to get going,” I snapped out, needing to get out of the quagmire we had gotten into. Besides, too much energy was moving through me, I was starting to feel like I was going to explode. “The sooner we get the academy and get all this figured out the better.”

I found my bag and tried to grab it, but Zilon beat me to it. I tried to glare at him but he only shook his head. I sighed, knowing he wasn’t going to let me. I felt the stubbornness coming from him.

“Fine.”

“We still need to find food,” Philit said, looking at what was left of the bags.

“Make Landers go get it,” I grumbled. “As punishment for not giving me a warning before he threw me off a mountain.”

Landers snorted. “If you don’t want to eat, sure. I can go look. But if you want to punish me, I have a few ideas.”

He waggled his eyebrows and I knew exactly what those ideas were. I threw snow at him. He clearly needed to be cooled down, and now thanks to the connection I wanted to throw him in the snow and take him, not punch him.

“Just keep an eye out and when you hear something, let us know,” Philit grumbled, his blue eyes dark as he stared at me. Although this time he didn’t pull away.

This time when we headed out, Philit was the one to stay by me.

“Rayna,” he whispered my name after a minute, and I felt like I had been pulled to attention. “I was wrong.”
