“Doesn’t want me,” I cut him off. “You do. I want you, too.”

Zilon’s breath hitched, but so did something else deep in the forest.

“Shh,” I hissed, Zilon freezing as we both turned to the bank of trees that Philit and Landers had gone into.

I could hear Landers grumbling about something off in the distance, but that wasn’t what I had heard. It was more the silence, everything was devoid of any creatures. The birds I expected because of the snow, but the rabbits and the squirrels that had been following us were gone. I didn’t think Philit was that great of a hunter.

“Rayna?” Zilon asked, following me to my feet. “What is it?”

The sound came again, and this time I knew it instantly.

“We were right. That blasted Fae brought them right to us.” We were completely surrounded by them. “We need to go!”

We were too late. The Fae stepped out, led by the one we had captured. He stood in the center of the line of Fae, his smile wide.

“Why leave now? It’s about time I thank you for all your generosity.” He was even more smug as he pulled a sword from its sheath, the point aimed right at Zilon.

“You are a fool if you think you can take us,” Zilon laughed, pulling me closer to him instinctively.

“Oh, I’m not taking you. Just her. You, I will kill.”

I wanted to feel safe, but there was only dread coursing through my veins. Dread that multiplied a second later when twice as many Fae stepped through the trees.

We were surrounded.

“Shit.” Zilon growled, pushing me slightly behind him as he turned us, trying to get a sense of where to go, only to be met with more Fae.

“There’s too many,” I said, clinging to Zilon.

“Then we go up.” Zilon yanked me to his chest as he jumped, the large wings on his back flapping ferociously as we took off into the air.

“Stop them!” The Fae screamed, but he was too late, we were soaring too high, too fast.

“You can fly like this?” I gasped out, still trying to grip him. Fucking hell, if they could fly in their human forms why were we trudging through undergrowth?

“I can, but not very long,” he gaped, his wings suddenly slowing and dropping us more than a few feet.

Okay, that was a good reason why we hadn’t done this before.

I shrieked and clung tighter to him, his wings tried to speed up, but only got a few good flaps in before they slowed down and we dipped again.

“Shit. They’re following us. As soon as I have to land, they’ll be there. I’m sorry, Rayna. I can only keep us up in the air for a long time as a dragon.”

“But…”

“It’ll be okay.” Zilon squeezed me tight. “I promise.”

Then the asshole dropped me.

I screamed, my eyes watering from the speed of my fall. Terror slammed into me. I was dead. So dead. There was a loud roar and a burst of energy above me. Then a huge shape blocked out the sun briefly before shooting down past me.

I closed my eyes, not wanting to see my death coming.

Then I landed into something, hard and prickly. It was an oddly soft landing seeing as whatever I had landed on was cutting into the fabric on my pants. I opened my eyes, realizing I was sitting on a dragon, and it wasn’t Philit. This dragon was slightly smaller, with green scales instead of the dark blue.

Zilon.

I straightened in my spot, sitting lower than I had been when I rode Philit. I tried to grab onto his spines, aware that I could fall again and this time, I wasn’t sure if he’d be able to save me in time. Then Zilon’s spines began shifting and moving, rolling toward me. Something yanked me forward, so I sat up higher, between where his shoulders would be.
