I scoffed. “Are you fucking serious? You’re going to bring that up?”

“Why not. It’s true. We got nothing out of it. We all risked our necks, and you spread yourself for–”

I punched him, and he went down with a beautiful flourish. Snow went everywhere, his grunt lost in the drift I had just sent him into.

“Just because you surround yourself with bimbos who only want your dick for your money doesn’t mean you get to put everyone into that category,” I snarled at him, already rushing over to have another go.

Zilon pulled me back, “Rayna’s right. Besides, she’s taken this trip a lot better than you have.”

“She’s weak. We’re moving this slow because of her.” Landers turned, glaring at as all as he wiped the snow from his front.

“But she hasn’t complained since the beginning of the first day,” Philit said. “No matter how exhausted she feels or how cold she is, or how hurt her feet are, she hasn’t complained. You have. Every damn day you find something else to whine about.”

Landers tried to shove Philit, but Philit didn’t budge. Philit growled and returned the favor, shoving Landers away. Landers landed on his ass, right back in the same drift.

“Knock it off! You can all measure you di–”

“Ha!” Landers cut me off, shifting in the drift and pushing away the snow to reveal the side of the next marker, and what Philit had been looking for.

“That’s the stone tablet.” Philit said, pushing Landers out of the way. “We’re back on the trail.”

“Guess you picked your dragon too soon,” Landers said smugly, already leading the way. “I’m the one that’s going to get us out of here.”

“One marker hardly counts for anything,” I grumbled, as Landers and Philit moved through the trees, leaving Zilon and I alone, hearing Landers' words ring on repeat.

It had been too soon.

I never should have jumped on Philit’s back.

Chapter Twenty-Two

We cleared a bit more of the area of snow until we were sure where the path was.

“We better get moving.” Philit was staring at the angry clouds in the sky. Another snow storm was on its way in with the way the wind was whipping around, it reminded me so much of home, when Da and I would run out to bring the horses in.

I cringed against the ache in my chest and pulled my cloak up closer to my ears.

“If we move fast enough, we might be able to make it over the peak today.” Philit was confident, I was cracking at the seams.

“We’re only half way?” Even through my teeth chatter I was approaching hysterics.

A creep of a smile appeared and then promptly vanished from Philit’s face. “I’m telling you we need to get going if we are going to find shelter tonight.”

His face was playful, but his tone was not, he was already bolting up the path before he even finished talking. I knew the guy was pissed, but he was giving me more than a cold shoulder. I had seen more of his retreating ass that should really be allowed.

I didn’t even care that it was a good view at this point. I was just pissed.

I stared after him for only a second before I followed him and the others that were retreating further up the path. It wasn’t like I had another option; it was going to be dark in a matter of hours.

“Are you okay?” Zilon asked as I caught up to them, only for Philit to pick up his pace again.

He moved in front of me, my breath floating between us. I shivered, pulling my cloak closer around me.

“I’m sparkly. Like ice. Because that’s what I feel like.” I had clearly run out of good attitude. “But in good news. We are halfway!” I grinned, trying to make the news more on the positive side. Zilon’s face fell. I knew that feeling.

“At least it’s all downhill from here,” I mumbled, adjusting the bags on my back, the meat that was in there had frozen into even hard chunks that were pressing against my spine painfully.

“Did you really just say that?” He was clearly trying not to laugh.
