I frowned, my eyebrows bunching up in confusion. “Do what?”

“I caught you, but you weren’t supposed to act as my rider. Why the fuck did you do that? Do you even realize what you just did?”

I went from loss to confusion to fury so fast that I was fairly certain I would be the one to breathe fire next.

“What I did?” Screw keeping myself calm. “What exactly did I do? You caught me, and I slid down your back. It’s not my fucking fault that your damn body forced me into that position. Do you think I was expecting that? That I wanted to be trapped like that. That I wanted your fucking spines penetrating me like that?”

Saying it made that loss and need well up in me again, but I pushed it away. Now was not the time to be horny. Now was the time to be mad.

“Penetrate?” Zilon whispered, but I ignored him. I refused to be the one that walked them through how that worked.

“We weren’t meant to bond! That isn’t how this fucking works. I only wanted to get you safely out of there.” He ran his hand over his head, eyes bugging out. “What the fuck am I supposed to do now? I can’t find my fucking true mate because of you.” He pointed at me, his finger full of more accusation than his words ever could be.

I grabbed his finger and squeezed it hard, yanking it down. “No. I refuse to take full blame for this shit. You were the one who couldn’t control yourself. It was your damn body that did this. Not me.”

“You guys mated? Are you fucking serious?” Landers yelled, barging in on our fight as soon as he realized what we were talking about.

“That’s a joke, right?” Zilon asked, I looked at him, but he was looking only at Philit. The betrayal there was just another stab against my soul.

Great, I hadn’t done any of this, and now everything was unraveling.

“This isn’t what we agreed on. You weren’t supposed to choose anyone until we got there.” Landers turned to me with a glare.

“Again. Wasn’t planning on falling to my death.”

“I sure as hell wasn’t planning on choosing her,” Philit snarled. “I just wanted to help you get to the academy. This is how you thank me? By taking my choice away?”

“My fucking choice was taken away too!” I wanted to scream to the skies, to make sure the goddess heard me. I wasn’t sure if this was all me, or if Philit was feeding into my emotions too, but all I knew was that I wanted to yell and throw things, maybe punch Philit’s face in. All his words were hot stabs into my chest, his rejection throwing my thoughts into chaos.

“So what we saw was real,” Zilon asked, stepping between us all, getting our attention. “Rayna was riding you? She chose?”

Zilon’s broken expression practically did me in. Frankly, once we got there and they made me choose, the answer had been easy. Zilon all the way. But I rode Philit. I helped him blow fire.

“You might as well fly her the rest of the fucking way, end this damn trip before we get killed,” Landers said, glaring hard at Philit. “Was that even the plan the whole time, to claim her as your own.”

Philit shoved Landers back. “Back the fuck off. Do you think I wanted that to happen? This isn’t how this works. We were supposed to go to the academy and receive our match there. This is all out of order now. This is all wrong. I don’t want her on my back. I never did.”

Philit stormed away from us and punched at a tree, over and over again. I swore I could feel the pain of his hits in my knuckles, like his pain was mine.

“What happened in there?” Zilon asked in a soft voice, not looking at me.

“I fell. It was a crevice or something. Philit flew down and got me, I just grabbed hold of him, I didn’t mean to ride him, but his spines…” I swallowed, I really had no idea how to explain this. No wonder the dragons or their riders didn’t explain it.

“What exactly happened?” Landers asked, getting in my face. I shoved him back away from me, needing breathing room. All my thoughts were so jumbled and I felt like I was juggling two sets of emotions—my own and Philit’s. It was a jumbled mess in my head.

“I got on him and we…connected. I helped him breathe fire.” My face heated as I remembered the way his spine locked me onto him. As he went inside of me. As he made me come again and again.

My eyes widened and I looked down at my skirt. The layers of fabric were absolutely shredded, impressions of his spine on my skin, but not bruising. I was bare for them to see, the torn fabric barely enough to cover me properly.

“Shit.” Zilon noticed where my attention had gone. I turned sideways to cover as much as I could, forgetting how bare I had become.

“Here.” Zilon tossed a pair of his pants to me after digging it out of his bag. I wasn’t sure how he managed to hold onto any of the bags, but I was thankful as I quickly went behind a tree and shoved on the pants, throwing my torn and mud covered skirts to the side.

“Fuck this shit,” I heard Philit growl out before his heavy stomps moved further away from me.

“This isn’t over,” Landers chased after him. “I want answers. You had a part in this too, Philit!”

Zilon waited for me, but he refused to look at me. As soon as he saw me come out from behind the tree, he took off after the others, leaving me to chase after all of them.
