Now they didn’t just look like a guard, they were his guard.

“Don’t speak to them,” Philit roared, all of the shifting as the last of the Fairies left their blizzard attack mob to back him.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I don’t appear to be your captive anymore. You have no say… or do you want me to send them back to you?” The Fae was giddy as he danced around, the Fairies gnawing on his ropes as they fell to the ground.

“I’d like to take my chances,” Landers grumbled, both he and Zilon stepping back to guard me as Philit stepped forward.

“If you insist.” The Fae grinned before he spoke in Fae, his smile stretching as he stepped forward, the Fairies following his every move.

“Shut him up!” I yelled, but it was too late.

He made another chittering sound and then the Fairies were soaring at us, looking like they wanted to rip us apart.

Holy fuck, they were going to eat us.

The dragons swore, swatting at them, but there were just so many. Hundreds, if not thousands, just converging on us like a swarm.

I got it now. Why the dragon couldn’t get out of the tunnels in time. Why there were so many scorch marks and claw marks. Why we were utterly fucked.

The Fae laughed, stepping back, letting the fairies do the work for him.

“Do not worry, little divine, I have told them to spare you. I would not risk a life as precious as yours…!” I could barely hear him over the snarling of both Fairy and man. But he was right, they Fairies weren’t coming at me. In fact, they were avoiding me at all costs.

Maybe I could use this…

“Can I fucking shift now?” Landers asked, swatting hard at the fairies, trying to keep them away.

“Yes! Shift! Fucking shift!” Philit waved his torch out at them, catching a couple of the fairies on fire. They soared away with a different kind of screech, but there were already six more waiting to take their place.

Zilon grabbed and batted at least ten of them away as he and Philit turned to me.

“Rayna, run,” Philit’s eyes were bright blue, his hands boiling as he grabbed my forearms. He actually looked scared. I had never seen him scared, and the look alone was absolutely terrifying. “We need space. These bastards won’t touch you, it’s up to you to lead the way.”

I nodded, I had no idea where to lead them, but I guess I would have to figure it out on the way. It’s too bad they couldn’t breathe fire, then we would just blast back through the caved in opening.

“What if you don’t fit?” I asked, looking to the ceiling that I still couldn’t see. Zilon held his torch high, the light barely reaching the stone ceiling before he handed it to me.

I took it, the damn thing feeling like a dead weight.

Philit shook his head. “I doubt that will happen. These are obviously dragon caves taken over by winter fairies.” He grunted when a said fairy latched onto his arm. He yanked it off and it threw it hard against the wall, ignoring its squeak. “Dragons don’t do dead ends. Find a path, and stick to it. Keep going until you get a way out.”

“Watch it!” Zilon swung at some fairies trying to dive bombed at me.

“Move back,” Philit said. “Give me room. Landers next, then Zilon when you have enough room. I’ll provide the opening.”

“Stay close.” I bolted into the darkness before he could respond.

“Come back divine!” The Fae sang from behind me, the laugh in his voice forcing me to turn. “You don’t know the death that waits you there.”

The guy was a freak show, so I flipped him off, just as the air crackled with energy. Philit bellowed out a roar, causing my skin to shiver. I stopped my race to turn, just in time to see the boys howl as their bodies began to explode. The lines of scales in their humanoid form expanded in a roar, their bodies twisting and contorting as a massive dragon appeared from inside of them. It was just as beautiful as I expected.

“Now, Rayna!” Zilon called out, just as his shift took hold.

I didn’t hesitate. I turned and sprinted into the darkness, leaving both Fairies and dragon’s behind.

“We will get you Rayna!” The Fae was hysterical, I didn’t even turn.

Okay legs, don’t fail me now. I needed to get these guys through this. I could only hope we were fast enough.
