“That’s a shame.” The Fae clicked his tongue. “Yet another reason you are ill suited to protect the girl.”

“You want me to remove your tongue? Keep talking,” Landers snarled, the air around him crackling.

Philit straightened and looked back at where Landers was holding onto the rope that kept the Fae bound. Philit glanced at the Fae before grabbing the rope and tugging him further away from the tablet.

“Rayna, keep an eye on him,” Philit said, walking by me, his arm brushing with mine as he tied the rope to a tree. The dragon practically jumped at that brief moment of touch before going back to the other two.

The three of them huddled around the stone pillar, hissing and whispering as they pointed this way or that.

“They do not trust you,” the Fae said.

I sighed. “I’m too exhausted to play mind games with you.”

“I simply mean we would never treat you like this. They are only handling you. They are not interested in taking care of you. It only proves my point. You do not belong here.”

“I am exactly where I need to be.” Why was I engaging with him? I really shouldn’t be engaging with him.

“When you get to your destination. When all the dragons know you are one of the divine? Then what?”

“Stop calling me that.”

“A Divine,” the word was like silk as it twisted my stomach. “I will continue to call you that, for that is who you are.”

“We are called riders.”

The Fae shook his head. “A Divine is a rider. It is an honor to be called as such. You are revered for beholding such a title. Why do the others, your people, think the name is abhorrent?”

“Because it sounds like someone you worship.”

“Because we do.” There was something about the way he said that that didn’t make it nearly as creepy as it should have been.

I frowned and finally faced him, taking my attention away from the three guys hovering over the stone tablet. “What do you mean?”

The Fae smiled. I grimaced, realizing I fell for his little trap. He was trying to confuse me, and frankly, it was working.

“The dragons will lose this war. It has already been foretold. Any rider with them will also perish. There is no stopping that. I would hate to see you on the losing side.”

“Foretold,” I scoffed, it was about as much nonsense as seers and wards. “The dragons will win. They are strong.”

“Oh silly girl. They are not strong. They only rely on the strength of their dragons without understanding it completely. They are nothing without the power they steal from you. They are weak and they will all die. Along with their mates, their friends, their families. Everyone. If you stay with them, you will follow, and so will your family. You already lost your father, right? Because you are all weak.”

“Your people killed my father,” I seethed.

“Your father was holding you back, too. We released you from his controlling bonds. We did you favor, even if you don’t—”

I punched him.

Pain erupted from my fist as the Fae jerked back and landed on his ass, the rope pulled taut from the tree. I cried out, taking a step back as my knuckles pulsed with pain. The Fae just laughed.

Oh, hell no! This guy was done!

All I saw was red as I stalked toward the Fae. “You do not get to talk about my father or my family or anyone I know.”

I raised my fist, but Philit grabbed me and pulled me into him before I could get any closer.

“Whoa. Enough, Rayna.” Philit pulled me back, away from the Fae.

“Let me go.” I elbowed him, surprising him with my strength enough for him to release me. I tried to dive for the Fae again but Landers scooped me up and moved me back.
