This couldn’t be right.

No way. Not possible.

“Don’t damage her too much,” someone snapped out. “She’s divine, remember.”

The Fae yanked me to my feet or tried to, my legs didn’t want to work right, so I dangled there, all my weight only added more pain to my wrist.

“Let’s get her home before they find us,” their leader said.

I tried to yank back to get free, but it was pointless. They were too strong.

So much for the face ripping, I was going to have to find another way to fight back. I wouldn’t let this happen to me, not after I had seen a dragon, not after I had gotten what I wanted, when the life I had dreamed of was finally here.

“No…”

A loud screech tore through the air, booming through my body like a punch. The wind picked up, whipping around us furiously as the trees swayed, a whooshing sound beating at the air like a steady drum. The Fae yelled something, but I couldn’t make out the words with how loud the wind was.

Warm air rushed the clearing as a massive shadow smothered the ever growing light of dawn. I glanced up, the pain in my chest swelling into something different as a horrendous shape descended over us. It was like a wall of fire.

A furious roar filled the space, the screech an ear-splitting call that was followed by not one, but two others. The sound was all around us, echoing everywhere. Booming inside of me as though it was part of me. As though it was coming from me.

“No! Get her out of here! Hurry!” A Fae screamed, the sound barely audible over the wind.

The Fae’s grip turned into a vice, pain curling through my spine as the wall of fire turned into wind and scales.

“You are all fucked,” I whispered as I stared at the beauty of the red dragon’s unfurled wings, the same ones I had seen in the hall.

Landers.

Except everything about him had changed. The man was gone, and the beast that his wings and scales had hinted at had taken its place.

I never understood the size of a dragon until now, how massive they truly were. His dark red scales captured that little bit of sunlight that was peaking over the mountain, reflecting a dazzling vermillion that made him seem like he was on fire.

His four long legs were covered in scales, claws as long as my legs curled from each digit. His body was massive, accommodating the wings that were now triple the size of what I had seen before. Long spines lined his back, each one growing larger and then smaller as they continued over the long neck that stretched to a head that should have been horrifying, but instead only filled me with wonder. Gray eyes and sharp teeth only made his features more monstrous, more beautiful.

He landed on the ground with a roar, his spiked tail whipping forward and taking out at least half of the Fae. The remaining Fae charged at him with staves outstretched, arrows docked and hair flying.

I could only watch with my mouth hanging open as Landers screamed, his scaly neck outstretched as he roared. I expected fire, but there was nothing but the scream over teeth sharp as a dagger and twice as long. He snapped at air, as the Fae jumped out of reach, sending their arrows flying. Landers spun, but then he stumbled.

While he was massive, he was clearly not used to being a dragon. His movements were stiff, confused, uncontrolled.

So when his tail whacked the Fae, it wasn’t exactly on purpose. He only had his size keeping him safe.

“He’s a whelp,” the leader said with a bark. “Take her away, we’ll keep him busy.”

“You better hurry. There are two more on the horizon, coming in fast,” someone else called.

“They’re all whelps. Kill them, that will be three less monstrous abominations to worry about.”

Kill the dragons? Yeah, I wasn’t going to let that happen. I had already lost Da…

“No!” I ran at them, arms swinging like paddles as I clawed and slapped and punched.

I might as well have been fighting a brick wall.

A brick wall that pushed me back with just as much force.

I grunted as I hit the ground. Then I rolled away and jumped to my feet, sprinting toward the dragon.
