“Yes.”

“You’re fortifying your border, as I had said.”

I quirk a brow. “Actually, I’m the one who suggested sending four magical royals to shake hands and kiss babies instead of sending an army.”

“There are different ways to strengthen the area. I’ll be interested to see how this option works out if your mother chooses to go with your idea.”

“Would you go as well?”

He shrugs. “If you win the crown, I’ll be king-consort someday. It seems fitting I see more of Alchos than just Mirador.”

This time last week, I’d have been jumping at the opportunity to distance myself from Jamys, but now, I might appreciate this idea of his. I glance at his parents. Would they allow it? Would Jamys be quite different away from them? More like the musician playing a haunting melody in a cave than the perfect prince?

My smile isn’t the one I rehearsed when I fretted over his arrival. It’s real, now. “I suppose we’ll find out tomorrow if that will be happening.” And to my surprise, I think I want it to.

Chapter fourteen

“Will you require any formalwear?” Lucy goes to the wardrobe that holds that collection.

I look at the piles of clothing already deemed necessary and sigh. “I suppose one or two dresses.” At this rate, we’re going to have to bring an army just to transport all our things.

“Both yours, or do want any of the new Cerauno gowns?”

“Goodness, no! I can’t possibly burden horses with dragging those things around the kingdom.”

She snickers as she picks out far lighter and more appropriate options. “You’re certain you don’t wish for me to come?”

“Yes. Royals traveling is so complicated for everyone. I’d like to simplify it as much as possible.”

“Your sister is bringing Kristance.”

Of course she’s bringing her maid. Nina doesn’t care how much of a burden she is on anyone. “I’m not my sister.”

A day of preparations comes and goes. Our convoy is packed. We’re all ready, and goodbyes are said.

Jamys and I walk out to the courtyard which is still hazy with morning mist. I turn to him with a smile. “I’m surprised your parents allowed you to traipse about a foreign kingdom with us.”

“They’re content to let me stay at your side.”

Whether to secure their investment in me or for sentimentality, I don’t know, but I don’t let it worry me. Jamys’ intentions are the only ones that matter, and he’s transparent as a clear sky about wanting to get to know me and build a real relationship.

I come across Tomas checking a saddle. “Have you come to see us off?” I ask.

“I’ve come to escort you.”

My jaw clenches. “What?”

“I’m going with you.”

“Why?” The idea of being in such close company with Tomas and Jamys leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Never did I think I’d be so put off by being around him, but having Tomas nearby will make it impossible to feel comfortable around Jamys. He’s my future, and any time I spend with Tomas will make it more difficult to move on. I want to take Jamys up on his offer to make our relationship real.

“My uncle asked my family for assistance. We can’t decline without an explanation.”

“People are being sent. We are going there.”

He scoffs. “Highbluff can’t very well take credit for sending the royal family.”

“I can explain it.”
