I grinned.

I found him.

I neared the edge of the cloud, putting my ear close, staying hidden so they wouldn't see me from the other side.

"The Atlanthyst Stone."

A deep, cool, confident voice slipped into the air and snaked into my chest, causing a flutter. A delicious, icy trill tickled my shoulders. I licked my lips. Was that the voice of the prince? And the Atlanthyst Stone? Why were they talking about it?

"Of all the bloody gems, he wants the Atlanthyst Stone?"

"Isn't that stone buried deep in the Pearl Palace?"

"Do you hear anything?" Kianga whispered, leaning in. "Cause we can't?—"

"Shh," I hushed her, listening closer.

"How in the rot are we supposed to get into the Pearl Palace and steal the stone?"

"I have a plan."

I plucked out every hushed word spoken, growing hot with anger. How dare they try to steal the stone? Especially when I needed the burning thing if I was going to survive El'Tide!

Abruptly, the cloudy barrier disappeared. Bristling steel-grey and blue eyes looked directly at me.

"See." The angel looked at me and chuckled.

The Sea crush me with her unforgiving waves if I didn't buckle even just a little beneath the sound. This was High Prince Yakobba? Rot, he was handsome.

"Payè demands I bring Aziziens. Well, here they are."

Yakobba tilted his head, studying me.

"Wait! I was looking for you. On behalf of the princess. I am her Ayella-in-waiting. She expected to see you on her arrival, but you?—"

"Don't care," he finished smoothly, splaying that cocky grin of his. It angered me to my core. His eyes flashed like quickening silver. "Engèli, take them. All three. Bring them to the Ashweaver."

Tobe and Kianga whipped out their tridents. A flash of light popped above our heads. A whip of mist shot out, latching onto our bodies. In a blink, Kianga, Tobe, and I were bound by chains of cloud. The big angel, Engèli, looked large enough to pulverize a platoon with his bare hands. I cursed, my panic rising.

"Release us now, you shell-eating piece of rot!"

Yakobba whistled. "So the pretty one has a temper."

"Let us go!"

"Oh, pearling, I will." His smile both aroused and enraged me at the same time. "On my ship."

High Prince Yakobba winked at me. Then Engèli reached forward, grabbed us by our chains, and dragged us away.

Deceptions at Sea

YAKOBBA

"Ican't believe you left Avari without telling the king and queen."

I looked at the ayèl floating beside me and grimaced.
