He blew out a tired breath and turned, lifting his knee as he faced us. “A dozen or so neighborhood kids approached his men. They knew they were talking to Dias’s guys and asked for work.”

“Kids?” I asked.

“Fourteen to seventeen-year-olds is what the delta team guessed.”

“Delta? They’re supposed to be following Brazzi,” Cruz cut in.

“Yeah.” Javi shook his head. “One of Dias’s guys called him and asked if they had work for these kids. They were desperate for money, and he figured they could do some runs or something. Dias told him to send them to the docks to unload a shipment.”

Em nodded. “Okay?”

“He sent them to Brazzi’s docks, but they didn’t know that. He told them to tell whoever was there that Alessio Dias himself sent them.”

Derek tensed. “No.”

Javi nodded. “They were all shot immediately. Killed just because they needed help and thought they could trust Dias.”

Em pursed her lips and stared at the ceiling.

“He might not have pulled the trigger, but he killed thirteen children tonight.”

“Why?” Cruz asked. “It doesn’t make sense.”

“Because those kids weren’t nameless, faceless street rats.” Javi rubbed his jaw. “They have parents and families that will miss them. They’ll go to the cops. They’ll look for them.”

“And Brazzi will be blamed,” I finished.

Javi met my eyes and nodded.

“Well, fuck. That’s one way to get revenge.” Cruz dropped back against the pillows.

“He truly is a monster,” Em muttered.

CHAPTER 13

Emilia

If I didn’t wrap this mission up soon, I was going to end up too used to this lifestyle. Sipping mimosas while lying out on the sunbed on the bow of Alessio’s smaller yacht while the bastard worked from his laptop next to me wasn’t the worst way to spend my days.

Knowing what a twisted prick he was made it harder than normal to act like an adoring girlfriend, but I had a job to do. He would face the consequences soon enough.

At least I finally satisfied my boat craving, although I would have traded him for my guys.

How could I go back to my mundane days at the Pack lands after being spoiled for months? It would be too cruel.

Maybe El Lobo would be so pleased with all I accomplished he’d send me to the territory on the beach in Mexico with a staff to bring me frozen drinks and tacos. It wasn’t much to ask for in return for my dedication.

I could assassinate all the people he needed at night while I rotted away in a hammock during the day with a piña colada in both hands.

Maybe I could just kill Alessio now. Slip him some of my special powder and throw him overboard. It was nicer than he deserved, but I was willing to get this mission over with so I could hurry up my retirement.

“What are you thinking about?” Alessio pulled me from my daydream.

I turned my head and lowered my sunglasses.

“You’re smiling,” he continued.

I chuckled. I’m sure I was. “Just fantasizing about how nice it would be to have nothing to do all day every day but exist on a beach.” With you six feet under.
