She glanced at him curiously. He had lost two wives already. Does he think I’ll die soon too? The thought was a sobering one.

Tia, the werewolf who never seemed too far from the alpha’s beck and call, was already whispering in Jon Golden’s ear. Golden was the third in command, but he liked to act as if he was the alpha himself.

“I’ll go and tell Anders myself,” she announced.

“Very well.”

She turned to go.

“Misti.”

Wincing inwardly at his soft tone, she faced him. “Yes?”

“I know you care for him.” He almost spat out the last word. “I hope that in time, you will learn to care for me too.”

“We need to ensure we have time first, which is why we need the war council.” She hurried past him. Time. There was a time she hated all Shadowed Stars just because of their pack. Now, she had fallen for one. Time made for interesting bedfellows, it seemed.
