I stare at him in shock. Really? He’s really going to let me return to Millerton?

I want to pump my fist in triumph. Maybe my life doesn’t have to be so different after all.

I think of Julia and the girls. Oh my god, I can’t wait to see them. There’s so much for us to catch up on that can’t really be said in a text. The boys. I swallow, my cheeks heating. They’ll never believe it. The arranged marriage…. Shit.

“Nico, Enzo, you’ll take care of her, obviously,” Albert says, looking at each of them with a lingering stare.

The guys both nod in unison, seemingly expecting this.

Wait, what?

They are already done with college… how are they going to look after me? Unless…

I look from Albert to Enzo, to Nico and my heart sinks.

No. This—this isn’t what I want. “But,” I pause, swallowing. “I meant, I mean, can’t I go back to Millerton on my own? It’s not even that far. I can live here and attend during the day.”

“It’s this or nothing.”

Fuck.

I look to the guys for help but see no sympathy there. Of course they want this as much as Albert does. I have no allies here. Not for this.

“Fine, thank you, Albert.”

It’s something – not what I want, but it is a small win. I take what I can get. I don’t have the ability to fight back, and I need a win, even if it’s a small one.

Albert’s word is as good as law. So, when he decides that Christina will be returning to Millerton University and we will be accompanying her, that’s all there is to it. Her safety is our utmost importance.

Not that either of us needs the direction. We’ll be her fucking attack dogs.

I’d rather pick out my own eyeballs than willingly let Christina go somewhere unprotected.

It’s not that Millerton is particularly dangerous. It probably has enough security to keep her safe.

But as long as I’m still breathing, her safety will be my number one priority.

“I think you’ll like it here,” I say to her.

“I hope so,” she mumbles beneath her breath.

“I know it’s not what you imagined,” I say, acknowledging her sad expression. “But you’ll be okay.”

I know that she feels as if she doesn’t have friends anymore. I glance over at her. She hasn’t said anything, but it would make sense that she’s missing her friend Julie or Julia or whatever it was.

I want to take her hand in mine and squeeze it, but I’m trying to give her space to adjust.

I walk with Christina to the registrar’s office. Nico carries her bag, striding along right next to me.

“You think I’ll be safe here?” She asks.

“Of course.” I smile down at her.

Albert pulled us aside this morning and emphasized the importance of keeping her safe. I don’t know what has him worried. Someone would have to have a hefty set of balls to pick on her while she’s under our protection.
