“Yeah, but this is different.”

“Sure.”

And suddenly my happiness evaporates, and I’m simply left with a feeling of how fake this all truly is, and how much of an idiot I am for expecting anything else.

“Just don’t get on my side and push me off in the night,” Josie tells me sternly.

I stop what I’m doing. I look at her.

Then I look at the massive king-sized bed.

“It’s pretty damn big, Josie,” I whisper. “I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

She takes a moment.

She looks down at the immense bed, and then she looks back at me.

Another pause.

“Oh, yeah,” she whispers in reply. “It probably won’t.”

“We’re not in any normal apartment,” I tell her. “This bed is big enough for a family to sleep in.”

“You’re right.”

She’s wearing the PJs she brought along in her luggage - a simple white tee and matching pants.

I’m just wearing my designer underwear. I usually sleep naked, but I think I’ll save the poor girl from that sight.

We made it back from the gelato place and Hayley and just unwind for the night.

Our first night sleeping together...

“Just stay away from my side, okay?” Josie instructs me. “I don’t want to put up a border wall.”

I laugh and raise my hands in mock surrender.

“Wouldn’t dream of crossing the border into enemy territory.”

“Good. As long as that’s understood.”

We both slide into the massive bed at the same time. I lean over and press the button by my side that turns off all the lights in the room.

“I’m not tired,” she tells me in the darkness.

“Sure.”

My eyes slowly adjust to the black. By the time they do, I can clearly see Josie fast asleep.

So much for not being tired.

I stare at her sleeping form for a long minute. She looks so... beautiful. Peaceful.

I never watch the girls who sleep in my bed, but now I can’t take my eyes off the barista.
