“What kind of a deposit?”

“Fifty thousand dollars.”

“What?” Her eyes pop.

“In cash.”

“You can’t be serious.”

“Those are the terms.”

“I’ve given you a thousand dollars already.”

“Non-refundable. Of course.”

I jump in. “This is shameless extortion.”

There’s a pause before he says, “That’s a very serious accusation.”

“Trust me,” I tell him, “I’m an extortionist. When this is all over, maybe I’ll show you how it’s done properly.”

Chapter Fifteen

Danny

After a heated meeting with the caterers, I’m heading to Saint Nick Square to meet Tinka, with Carmine and Drago, in the Hollybush Diner.

A crew of bikers huddle outside with Boneyard Warriors patches. Drago said something about the local chapter. As I reach the door, I look in the shadowed eye of the biker with shades and a top-knot who looks like the top dog.

He peers suspiciously at me. “The civilian biker, you know him?”

So I ask what their problem is. The biker tells me about their ‘matter of honor.’

I already have enough bad news to carry. I tell him, “Two guys from your club disrespected him. They didn’t keep to the deal they made. And they spied on him, like pissy-ass feds.”

“There’s an order to things. A right way things get done.” I know bikers in Louisiana and their rituals of respect. They’re mostly fine men, but man, are they rigid in their ways.

I shrug, “Give me your number. I’ll tell him what you said.”

The biker nods, “Do it. A reckoning is due.” I can see in his eye that I’m getting through to him, though.

He shows me the number on his phone. I text him from mine so we’re connected, though I don’t expect to be making much use of the contact. Still, Danny takes every chance to increase himself.

Before he leaves, I tell him, “Danny. Danny Robbichaux.”

He nods and holds eye-contact as we make a handshake, shoulder to shoulder, forearms up and crossed. “Drill. Boneyard Warriors VP.”

He starts to lead his warriors away, and I head into the diner. I’m worried about what the food is going to be like. It’s as if no one around here ever heard of cayenne or chili pepper.

Chapter Sixteen

Drago

When I get into the steamy clatter of the Hollybush Diner, I already know that Tinka is there with Carmine. Couldn’t miss his red Bentley outside, nearly half the length of a city block.

They’re sitting with Danny at a round, gingham-covered table. Tinka’s eyes lift to me and wake up my cock. We share a lewd smile as I join the table.

Danny has hardly touched his steak and fries. He’s explaining, “The food suppliers and the caterers have pulled out at the last minute.” He looks around the table. “All of them.”
