I knew someone like that. Made me the virgin I am today.

Chapter Eight

Cyntia

Henry is waiting behind his desk, twirling his office chair side to side.

“Well?”

“The coffee won it.”

“So.” He gets up slowly. Stands and moves around from behind his desk. “What’s the story, Cyntia?”

I pull myself up straight. “The story, Henry, is that I just won you five million dollars’ worth of investment.”

“And you think he’ll come through? You believe what Caine says?”

“I expect you know him better than I do.”

“I wonder…” His eyes harden. “This all feels like there’s something at work.”

I have the same feeling. I’m sure we’re not thinking about the same thing, though.

“You sure you and him aren’t into something?”

“Like what?”

“It all smells like a ruse to me.” He moves nearer. Running out of space to back away, I extend a hand, palm out. “I think that’s close enough for boss-to-employee space, Henry.”

“See, now it feels like you’re implying something. I ought to sack you.”

Joe’s right about Henry. He’s a man who’s always looking around for someone to do him wrong.

“Did you use the coffee that I brought in?”

“That’s another thing. We’re nearly out of it. I started giving the customers some of the regular blend, but it’s not good enough for them anymore. One day, and look what’s happened to my little business.”

I shake my head. “A shop full of customers instantly addicted to your product. And after that, five million bucks.” I press my lips together. “It’s just one thing after another, isn’t it, Henry?”

“Level with me. Who’s supplying the coffee? Where are you getting it?”

“Henry, I couldn’t tell you if I wanted to.” A suspicious man like Henry is not someone to share a secret with.

He’s breathing hard. “There’s something going on here. Caine could buy me out for five million bucks.”

I shrug. “So sell it to him. Start again.”

“I meant if I was willing to sell. If I wanted to. Which I don’t.”

“Do you know what you want, Henry?”

He snorts before he lunges. I move out of the way, but not fast enough. His hand is on my shoulder. I shrug him off easily, but his other hand grabs the back of my hair.

“Now we’re going to see,” he snarls. “You’re going to tell me everything now.”

I slap his face, and he’s shocked. He doesn’t let go, though. Breath flies out of me as he yanks my face close to his.

The point of his nose presses on mine. His eyes bulge. “You think you’re smart…”
