Her snide comment irritated me.

“None of your business.”

“I’m going to find out. Were they clothed or naked? Enjoying a romantic meal or getting high?”

“Yep, you’ll find out.”

“You don’t have to be such a bitch,” Tess said.

“Right back at you.”

This back-and-forth with my sister was exhausting, but I couldn’t stop myself. I loved Tess, but life had a way of stirring shit up, and the last three years we’d focused on our disagreements more than agreements. We shared a bedroom our entire childhood. I knew all her secrets, and she knew most of mine. Those who knew you best knew best how to get under your skin.

Jennifer White was being wheeled out on a gurney, an oxygen mask over her face and an IV in her arm. Her messenger bag and laptop were between her legs. Damn, I should have gone through them when I had the chance. But in front of Monroe? I don’t think he would have stopped me, but I didn’t know and didn’t want to cross the line. At least, not yet.

“Margo,” Tess said in her you-need-to-listen-to-me-because-I-know-best tone.

I’d had enough. I got out and headed toward my Jeep.

Jack waved me down.

Dammit. No clean getaway.

I flashed my most charming smile and turned to Jack and the cop he was standing with.

“Yep?” Did I sound irritated or innocent?

He didn’t say anything, just gave me the look. Meaning, don’t leave. He said something to the cop that I couldn’t hear, handed him a business card.

I itched to go to the hospital and follow-up with Jennifer White. We needed information, and I couldn’t exactly ask Logan Monroe, considering I’d been trying to catch him au naturel.

“So, where do we go from here?” I asked Jack when the cop went back inside the house. We were standing under a tree. The canopy of leaves offered relief from the unforgiving sun to the point that I was comfortable.

“Monroe told Officer Cameron that Jennifer was a friend and they were having a business meeting, then both started to feel woozy and Jennifer fainted. He tried to carry her to the couch, when he stumbled and fell, losing consciousness.”

“How long? I was only a few minutes behind them.”

“White was in the house for about ten minutes before Monroe arrived. You arrived three to four minutes after he went in.”

“I spent about five, six minutes looking for a good viewpoint,” I muttered. “Okay. So either she got it worse because she was in the house longer, or they both drank something and she got it worse because she’s smaller.”

“Logical. They’re sending crime investigation out to test the air, filters, entire system. If something was airborne, they’ll find out what. They’ll test the water, both in the bottles and house. It’ll be several days before we have answers, unless the hospital can run her blood quickly.” Even then, unless the lab knew what to test for, they might not find anything.

“I have an idea.”

“I’m listening.”

“I can’t talk to Monroe—his wife hired me. He’s not going to tell me squat when millions of dollars are riding on whether he’s fooling around with White. But, he might talk to you—especially if he thinks his reputation could be in the tank if he doesn’t.”

“You’re okay with us talking to him?”

“Yep. This is the way I see it—if he’s having an affair, he’s going to cool it off for a while because he doesn’t want his wife to find out. If he’s not having an affair, he’s up to something else. Illegal?” I shrugged. “Who knows.”

“And you? You’re just going to wait until we have answers?”

“Nope. I’m going to the hospital. I can interview White. You’d be hard pressed to do so because you were hired to investigate her.”

He obviously didn’t like the idea, but he didn’t have a better plan, and I knew it.
