He nearly whispered, “You weren’t supposed to see what you saw. It wasn’t supposed to happen here, but I saw an opportunity and took it. Didn’t realize you were awake. I want you to know I’m a gentleman; I don’t do shit like that in front of ladies.”

“O…okay?”

He gave me one nod before standing and crouching before me, his eyes earnest as he shared, “And just so you know…that motherfucker deserved it.”

With that, he left, and I scrambled to my feet, rushing to lock my door before sliding down it to the floor in a mess of tears.

I didn’t get any sleep that night but drifted into a slumber the next morning on my sofa. When I opened my eyes again, it was dark outside, and I was starving. It took a moment or two for it to register in my brain that the doorbell was ringing. That was what had awakened me. I found myself frozen in place with my heart pounding, my breathing loud. My eyes darted around the room in search of I have no idea what. I was just fucking scared.

I yelped when my phone rang, a call from an unknown number. Ignoring it, I slowly made my way to my bedroom, to the window. Sitting on the bed, I peered out the window to see that it was him—the killer, and he was looking up at the window. I let out a tiny whimper and quickly covered my mouth with my hand as I ducked my head.

Ding!

I knew that sound to be a text message alert, so I headed back to my living room and my phone. The message read: I saw you. Answer your phone.

That text nearly made me shit myself—real bad.

My phone sounded with another call from the unknown number. This time, I answered, petrified not to.

“Hello?” I nearly whispered.

“Lilith, come answer the motherfucking door before I kick the motherfucker in. If I have to kick the motherfucker in, you’re not going to have a good motherfucking night. I motherfucking promise you that!”

“I…why are you back?”

“Because I want to be. Answer this got damn door! Right the-fuck now!” he roared, making me drop my phone.

On shaky legs, I left my apartment, descended the stairs, and unlocked the outer door before running back up the stairs, leaving the door to my apartment open. I was bunched up in the corner of my sofa when he sauntered in wearing a navy-blue suit, baby blue dress shirt, and no tie. His chiseled jaw ticked before his mouth spread into a white, brilliant, terrifying smile. There was a plastic takeout bag in his hand and anger in his eyes.

“Lilith, I know your parents raised you better than to leave a guest standing at the door like that,” he calmly stated, his voice contrasting the stormy look in his eyes.

Not a word of response from me.

“You have anything you want to say to me?” he asked.

I hesitantly shook my head.

He released a wry chuckle. “So, you have nothing to say? Nothing? I come here and bring you dinner a-fucking-gain and you ain’t got a damn thing you wanna say to me?”

“I-I don’t know what you want me to say,” I stammered.

“How about ‘thank you’?! Got damn!”

“Okay…th-thank you?”

“You’re welcome. Now, I brought some General Tso’s chicken, some beef and broccoli, and some vegetable fried rice. I also got some jalapeño fried rice for myself. I don’t know if you can handle the spice, but you’re welcome to have some.”

“I…I’m not hungry.”

“Why?”

I blinked. “I don’t know.”

After staring at me for an uncomfortable amount of time, he cleared the coffee table of the food he brought the previous night, and a few minutes later, plates of Chinese food sat before me on said table. Again, I watched him eat, refusing to do so myself.

When he was finished, he wiped his mouth with a paper napkin and shook his head. “I’m trying to get along with you, but you’re not making it easy. When I come back, you better have relocated your damn appetite.”

After glaring at me for several minutes, he made his exit.
