I gripped the band of my panties, blinking back tears. “Marlon. I got pregnant when I was with him…twice. He convinced me to get an abortion both times because he was still married to Felice, his wife. He…didn’t want to upset her because she was so sick, near death’s door, and I did it. I agreed. That was early on in our relationship, but then I stayed with him for years after that believing if I persevered, I’d get to have a wedding and a baby. I thought I’d get some dumb-ass happily ever after with another woman’s husband.”

A familiar shadow passed over Ray’s face, one I once feared. Now, I knew the deadly hate was never meant for me. “Baby?—”

“So, I guess maybe I deserve this. Maybe I deserve to have a price on my life. I’m not a good person. I’ve done bad things just to maintain a dead-end relationship. I was a fucking professional side chick to what I stupidly believed was a sure thing.”

He stepped inside the bathroom, placing his phone on the vanity. “You finished, baby?”

I frowned. “Yes.”

“Wash your hands and let’s go to bed.”

I nodded, feeling off balance by his reaction. Once we were seated side by side on the bed, he began to speak.

“I’ve been…I checked some records, and I don’t want to upset you, so I need you to promise me you won’t nut up on me when I tell you this.”

“What is it?!” I shrieked.

“Shit, you already done started.”

“And if you don’t tell me, I’m gonna really lose it.”

“That Marlon dude ain’t married. He and his wife are divorced, have been for over five years.”

23

I’m not sure how long it took me to speak after hearing those words, after hearing that Marlon wasn’t married and hadn’t been for five years. I was thankful that where Ray usually would’ve pushed for a response, he didn’t, no doubt fearing I’d fall apart.

Finally, I asked, “How long have you known about his divorce?”

“A while. A month or so,” he said.

I chuckled bitterly, letting my head drop backward. “He played me. He really played me, and I let him.”

“No, you trusted him. He chose to misuse that trust. That’s on him. I can’t wait to kill him!” he declared.

The glee in his voice made my mind shift gears. “You’re sure it’s him?”

“Ain’t gotta be sure. I’m doing his ass regardless. Nigga gotta go.”

My mouth dropped open.

“But,” he continued, “with the information about him being the beneficiary of your investments, I am sure it’s him.”

“Okay, then what’s next?”

“Next, I kill him.”

“Do you like killing people?” Lilith asked as we sat in the living room watching some detective show.

“Would it bother you if I did?” I questioned.

“Not really.”

“Not really?”

“That’s what I said, Diablo.”

Chuckling, I replied, “Like it? Sometimes. Depends on who I’m killing.”
