“Because you need to. Come.” He pulled me along as he stepped to the back of the space. On the way, I observed the pristine white, shiny flooring and elegant gray walls, the white roman columns situated throughout. It was a beautiful space, actually.

“Your current place is old. I’ve been looking around at night when you sleep, checking out the boutique, your office. There’s not enough room; the storage area is a fire hazard with all that shit stacked up to the ceiling. The employee toilet is ancient as fuck. You deserve better. Check this out.” He opened a door at the rear of the building, unveiling a huge room. “See, plenty of space for inventory. There are two employee restrooms, a break room,” he continued, leading me through the employees only areas, “and this would be your office.”

The office was enormous.

Like, damn!

“And with that new Sable Regency Inn across the street, the shopping center around the corner, and all the apartment buildings nearby, there’s lots of foot traffic,” he pointed out. “Perfect for Bon Vie.”

Frowning slightly, I questioned, “Why does it feel like you’re trying to sell this building to me, Mr. Killer Man? What’s going on?”

He grinned, and this time I noticed that his gorgeous smile reached his eyes, totally changing his aura. It was almost hypnotizing. “Mr. Killer Man? Cute. I like it.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Although I do own this building, I’m not trying to sell it to you. I’m giving it to you because you’re my woman.”

“I’m not your fucking woman. I never agreed to that.”

“Now, you know that don’t matter to me. You want the fucking space or not? Got damn, you’re difficult as fuck!”

“I’m difficult because you’re holding me hostage, nigga!”

“Better than the alternative, ain’t it?!”

I successfully snatched my hand from his. I guess I caught him off guard, but I had no idea what to do with this new liberation, so I just stared at him.

He stared back, the grin gone from his lips and eyes, his brows tented. The usual “insane nigga” expression had returned to his face.

So, I punched him in the nose and turned to run. I was almost to the door that led into the retail space when I felt him grab me from behind. I yelled and kicked, but it was no use. He was just too damn strong. In one motion, he spun me around and pinned me to the spotless wall next to the door. The only lights came from the various rooms we’d toured whose doors were slightly ajar. His face was shadowy as he glared down at me. He lowered his head, his face eerily close to mine as our mutually heaving breaths crashed between us.

I waited for his words, an explosion of anger, hell…a slap? Nothing for more than a minute, but his eyes remained narrowed, the furrow in his brow unchanged. When the words finally came, I didn’t understand them.

“Tell me to stop,” he gritted.

“What?” I said weakly.

He grabbed my jaw, bringing my mouth mere micrometers from his. “Tell. Me. To. Stop.”

I dropped my eyes, a feeling of discomfort making me anxious. I suppose he took my action as some sort of response, a permissive act antonymous to stop. And maybe, subconsciously, it was. Maybe I wanted him to do what he did next.

Maybe.

His mouth plowed into mine in an urgent, bruising kiss. My attempted protestations were muffled by his determination. I tried to turn my head, to move my body, but I couldn’t. His bulk was pressed against me, holding me in place. His hand still held my jaw as his scent flooded my nose. I struggled to cry out, but he took my open mouth as an invitation, his tongue quickly finding mine, and for some reason, I melted into him, whimpering as the kiss lingered on and on and on. My body tingled. My clit twitched, and when he finally pulled his mouth from mine, I nearly whined in protest.

“Do you want this fucking building or not, Lilith?” he ground out, his eyes on my mouth as he licked his lips.

I blinked and licked my own lips before nodding. “Yes,” I whispered.

“Good. Let’s go,” he ordered, yanking on his clothes to right them before proffering me his hand. After a few seconds of hesitation, I took it and let him lead me out to his car.

I had Bruno bring me my laptop so I could at least get a little work done while I figured out this shit with Lilith. Her attitude was seriously making me reconsider some things. Like, for real. Nevertheless, the little incident at my property seemed to have calmed her ass down a bit. Maybe this would work out after all.

I was at her dining table, my focus on my computer while she watched TV. The news was on. I hated the fucking news.

“We have an update on a case we’ve been following. The body that was found yesterday in a car at Hopkinson’s Salvage Yard has been identified as belonging to Talbert Penny. Viewers might recall that name as Mr. Penny had an extensive criminal record that involved such crimes as sexual assault and robbery. He was a registered sex offender and was the main suspect in the murder of fifteen-year-old Parkton High School student, Magenta Nation. Penny was never formally charged with the murder due to a lack of concrete evidence. Penny had been off the grid for years before his body was found. No details have been provided regarding his cause of death as of the time of this broadcast,” the reporter said.

I looked up to see Lilith’s eyes glued to me, as I’d expected.
