I put mine in too, not even bothering to answer that question as I move into striking range.

He chuckles, settling into his stance as well.

And the second my shin makes contact with his as he blocks my kick, the sharp sting makes my soul fucking sing. We’re not wearing shin guards because I want to feel it… and I do. It hurts, as it should, and it’s just what I need. And I want more.

As we continue checking each other’s kicks, I focus on my form and speed, adding more power behind each one. And the piece of myself I’ve been missing starts to slide back into place.

Luca bounces on his toes and jumps slightly to my left, landing a low kick that I didn’t get a chance to defend against.

“Ohhh, Ty. Come on, all that work we did to add speed to your fight… don’t tell me we’re back to square one?” Luca says with a smile, still bouncing.

I take a step to adjust my distance from him, and decide to take this a bit further. I quickly land a push kick right to his stomach, catching him off guard. He isn’t quick enough to drop his hands and block it, and a rush of air leaves him as he steps backwards to catch his balance.

“You were saying?” I ask, tapping my gloves together and moving back into my stance.

“Keep it clean,” Max mutters from the side of the ring, letting us do our thing but keeping a watchful eye.

Luca chuckles darkly, moving back into striking range. “Ok then, let’s up the drill. Kick-jab-cross-hook.”

My jaw tics as he eyes me with delight. He knows I have a plan for today’s drills, and that wasn’t one of them.

But we both also know I’m not about to back down from his challenge.

I step into him, immediately landing a left hook kick to his side, which catches his arm and causes him to grunt in displeasure. But he’s fucking fast, and he quickly gets his guard back up to parry my jab and cross, then block my hook.

But that doesn’t even matter, because it felt fucking fantastic.

I let a little smile tug at my lips, and Luca huffs out a laugh.

“I see that felt good.”

“It did.” I nod and let my eyes briefly drop to his side as he shakes out his arm.

Luca smirks at me as I plant myself in my stance again, ready to block his kick. I know he’s not going to hold back, and I don’t want him to.

I move quickly with him, blocking his kick with both forearms, staying in the moment but preparing myself for the next step.

And as I bring my gloves back up in preparation for his jab, I flinch.

The sight of his glove coming towards me brings on a feeling I’ve never experienced before. I block it, but it’s messy and desperate as I step backwards and lose my balance. Instead of parrying his punches, I keep my gloves up to keep him out and end up bringing my focus to my feet to keep steady. I manage to block his hook as he finishes out the drill, but the entire thing was a disaster as I completely lost my focus.

What the fuck?

I raise my eyes to meet Luca’s as he watches me with a furrowed brow.

“Get your feet under you, Ty,” Max says from the side of the ring. “Once you lose your balance, he’s on you.”

I swallow and nod, keeping my gaze on Luca. He eyes me with a silent question, but I refuse to answer it.

“Again,” I say as I move back into range and motion for him to attack.

“But you’re attacking this–”

“Again.” My eyes snap up to his, and he hesitates before moving into position as well.

The steps to this drill run through my mind as I prepare myself to see it through, and not let whatever that was happen again. I’m rusty, and I need to get my fucking head back on straight. There’s no excuse. I need to stay in the moment, anticipate, plan…

Double block the kick, parry the punches, block the hook.
