Every single lock has come undone, and all my doors are open. And I haven’t felt this light and free in a long time.

Only Luca fucking Mitchell.

I stare down at Luca, twisted up in his purple comforter, head half on a pillow with arms, legs and curls everywhere. He’s still sound asleep, and I’ve been up for hours.

I tap his shoulder and he just groans, not moving. With a sigh, I tap him again. One eye opens and he sleepily peers up at me as I hold out a coffee mug for him. But he just groans again.

“It’s 8:30. I let you sleep in. It’s time to get up,” I say, still holding out the coffee for him.

“Fuck off,” he murmurs as he pulls the blankets over his head.

I sigh again, setting the coffee on the bedside table. “I’m leaving for the gym in a few minutes.”

“Oh my god,” Luca’s muffled voice sounds from within the bed. “Just chill for a fucking second, we just woke up.”

“No, you just woke up,” I say. “I’ve been awake for hours.”

He whips the blankets back, sending an icy glare my way. “And whose fucking problem is that?”

“Yours.” I cross my arms. “Because we’re meeting with Max today to go over training plans, then I’m helping Seb with takedowns and you’re working with Elijah on kick drills.”

“Yeah,” he says flatly, “at 12:00. So why the fuck are you waking me up in the wee hours of the morning on a Saturday to go to the gym three and a half fucking hours early?”

“Because I figured it would be a good time for you to work on sweeps beforehand.”

Luca sits up in bed as he eyes me warily. “Oh. That’s manipulative as fuck.”

I cock an eyebrow at him. “To support you?”

“To get me out of bed early on a Saturday so you can support me at your desired time.”

“The fuck are you talking about?” I ask. “There’s time this morning. And we either do it now or this evening when everything else is finished. But guaranteed, something is going to come up and you’ll want to go out tonight, so it’s better to do it now.”

He huffs out a light laugh. “So, you’re telling me that if we train this morning, you’ll be ok with going out tonight?” A sly smile forms on his lips. “Because it sounds like this could also be a way to create more time for extra training tonight. Like… sparring?”

My jaw tics as I stare back at him, and his smile widens. While that was not my plan… the thought did cross my mind.

“Gotcha, fucker.” Luca chuckles. “I can read you like a manual.”

“A manual?” I ask, crossing my arms. “You mean a book.”

He thinks on that for a moment but waves a hand in dismissal. “A manual suits you better.” He runs a hand over his face with a groan. “Ok. I’ll get up and go to the gym with you. If we go out tonight. No sparring or training in striking today, we can do that tomorrow.”

A swell of anxiety forms in the pit of my stomach at that thought, but I nod. “Fine.”

Luca lifts his eyes to me.

“Oh, fuck off.” I roll my eyes. “Ok.”

He nods in approval, then holds his hand out with a sigh.

I look down at it, and keep my arms crossed. “What?”

“I’ll take my coffee now,” he says.

“It’s right there.” I point to the bedside table, where his coffee is sitting about a foot away from his outstretched hand.

But all he does is wiggle his fingers, waiting for me to pass it to him.
