I nod. “I’m assuming he struggles to strike while off his feet?”

“You got it.” Max gives me a nod. “And you don’t. So, spend more time on the mats with defensive drills while also opening up opportunities to strike. It’ll be a good way to wear him down and give you the edge quickly.”

“Got it.” I take a deep breath, letting the excitement and anticipation settle. This is exactly the fight I want.

“Luca.” Max turns to him.

“Please say grappler.” He puts his hands together in a prayer motion in front of him.

Max laughs. “Striker.”

“Damn.” Luca dramatically drops his hands. Then a light bulb seems to go off. “Oh, my roots. Yeah, ok got it.”

Max shakes his head with another chuckle. “Cris Alvarez. He’s also new to the LFA scene, and hasn’t had as many events as you. So there’s not a lot to go off of for him. But from what I have seen and heard, he’s a counter-fighter. He stays on defense and carefully picks his shots. He waits, needing committed attacks from his opponent so he can set up his actions. So you need to fight with a complex offense. Think one step ahead, at all times.”

I look at Luca and smirk at him, and he rolls his eyes at me.

“Yeah, yeah,” he waves a hand in the air towards me, “I got that from this one.”

Max huffs out a laugh. “Read him, disrupt him, deny his counters, then you’re set up to step in and explode.”

Luca nods with a smile. “Fucking right.”

Max shakes his head and smiles. “When you first came here, you both had a goal of strengthening other areas of your fight and becoming complete fighters. And I thought you guys were going to kill each other in the process. But now…” he pauses for a moment, looking between us, “you’re complete fighters.”

“And in love,” Luca adds seriously.

“That too,” Max laughs. “Which I never saw coming.”

“Me either,” I murmur, and Luca rolls his eyes at me.

“But you guys are in a good place to take this fight,” Max says. “You’ve already showcased your talent in the last two fights, and now you really need to bring it for this one. UFC officials are sniffing around, and they’re going to be there.”

I perk up at those words, and Luca scoots to the edge of his seat, clearly catching that as well.

“Are sniffing around?” Luca asks. “Where, exactly…”

Max just fucking shrugs. “All I can say is that you’ve been noticed already.” He then stands up and opens the door. “Let that fuel your fire, guys. They’re coming to watch you.”

THIRTY-SIX

“Monster attack!”

Happy screams from the second graders echo around the gym as I growl and put my hands over my head, entering monster mode.

“Get him!” Julian yells as he hastily puts his soccer ball away and starts running after me.

The kids all rush to the ball rack to put their equipment away while I stomp and growl after the few who are trying to bait me into catching them.

“Mmm, this one looks yummy,” I say, running after Olivia as she runs the opposite way of the rack.

She laughs with pure delight as I get closer to her. “Nooo!”

“Ah! Got you!” Julian jumps on my leg, and Silas jumps on the other one.

“Go put your ball away!” Silas yells to Olivia. “We need to take him down!”

Olivia scurries off to the ball rack as I make a show of being slowed down by two fifty-pound kids. “No, not my lunch!”
