My second flight was when Rooke had commandeered this vessel after Qhix landed on Zune. Our group, consisting of myself and four other girls and five Ziarian males, once prisoners on the small moon, had flown to Crao, a distant and safe planet where we could begin a new life.

I glance at Qhix, his beastly form towering beside me like my personal guardian sentinel, and I curse myself. I should have been more careful what I wished for.

I crave the intense pull my mated friends raved about. They gushed of a euphoric sense of wholeness, as if they had finally found the missing piece of themselves, and I wanted that too. It all sounded so romantic, and I hated that I was the only girl without a mate.

Despite my initial attraction to Slye, the Ziarian male with lustrous blue and black hair, it was merely a fleeting desire, lacking the profound connection the other girls spoke of. And I wanted that. Wanted to share a powerful bond with another.

When I first saw Qhix laid out on the ground, unconscious from the stunner blast Mordox had delivered, I was instantly intrigued by the tug on my soul.

As we zoom through space, Qhix gradually reverts back to the male who captivated me at first glance. His terrifying claws retract, his body shrinks back to its normal size, and the vibrant white of his irises return to their warm, frosty blue.

His transformation is mesmerizing, a juxtaposition of power and vulnerability. His breathing steadies, his grip on the controls loosens, and I can sense a wave of calm wash over him.

"I'm sorry, Tasha," Qhix murmurs, not taking his eyes off the forward viewscreen. "I didn't mean for my sivot to scare you."

His words momentarily soften the edges of my fear, but it's not enough to completely quell the uncertainty swirling within me.

"Excuse me, your what?"

"My sivot," he repeats, sparing me a glance. " Kaul males possess the ability to morph into beasts to protect their chosen females. An ability that's laid dormant in my species for millennia."

"Laid dormant?" I know I sound like a gibbering idiot, but it's not every day you see a guy morph into a raging beast. And definitely not every day said raging beast takes you captive.

"A long time ago, an endless war raged between my home world of Klaxis and our neighboring world of Cret. Kaul females took up arms alongside their male counterparts. No longer seen as fragile creatures to be sheltered, our females became ferocious warriors on the front lines. The sivot went dormant in the face of their strength and bravery," Qhix explains. "Sivot's haven't presented in millennia, because our females no longer need the protection of their mates."

"So when you hulked out, it was because of me?" My eyes go wide, and I point to myself, my initial fear of Qhix's beast fading a little. Not even the Ziarian males, who became ferocious in defense of their mates, could morph into a huge beast. "I'm flattered... I think."

"Apparently, our biology is compatible despite our difference in species. It's only happened one other time that I know of. Between my fellow Star Maverick Navik and a human female named Cora who he met on Onis." Qhix bursts out laughing. "What is it about prison moons and human females?"

"What do mean? What's so funny?"

"Onis is little more than a chunk of ice orbiting the planet Xont on the edge of the known Universe. On the moon, Onis, there's an underground prison that used to be run by an unscrupulous Xotis named Warden Hyt. The bliking fool put a bounty on Navik's head for stealing his favorite pet, Cora. In turn, Navik offered a heftier bounty for Warden Hyt's head on a pike, which I attempted to collect. But Behtu, the bliker, beat me to it," he sneers.

"Is Cora the human woman you mentioned earlier?" I should not be feeling jealousy over Qhix. "The one who taught you to say hello?"

"She is Navik's mate," he chuckles, "so you can stop growling at me."

I loosen my arms I don't recall crossing. "I wasn't... I'm not... I don't even know you. Why would I be jealous of another woman?"

"I like you jealous." Qhix's words hang in the air. Heat rushes to my cheeks, and I quickly avert my gaze, trying to regain some semblance of composure.

"Except I'm not jealous," I grumble, hating that he can so easily read my emotions.

Qhix turns in his seat to lean closer, his presence overwhelming and intoxicating. A dark craving unfurls a lick of heat between my thighs.

"So you claim." Qhix's finger gently lifts my chin, forcing me to meet his piercing gaze. A surge of electricity shoots down my spine. "Yet something has brightened your cheeks and sparked a fire in your eyes."

Qhix drops his face to the hollow of my throat, the warmth of his breath bathing my sensitive flesh. "I love seeing you all hot and flustered."

I bite down on my lower lip, a frisson running through me as his words stir a fire in my belly. The truth is, I can't deny the inexplicable pull I feel toward Qhix, even though it scares me. He scares me. The beast he can become. It's like being drawn to a flame knowing the danger but unable to resist the allure.

Qhix trails his fingers lightly along my jawline, his touch zinging through my body. "I can scent your desire, Tasha," he whispers huskily, his voice laden with a mix of longing and restraint. "Just as I can feel the yearning in my own veins."

My heart pounds with anticipation. "Shouldn't you be flying the ship or something?"

"Or something." I hear the curl of his grin in my ear. "The ship can fly itself. I'd rather acquaint myself with your fragrant cunt."

His admission shocks me, but also emboldens me. The air between us crackles with tension as our eyes lock, the unspoken connection growing stronger with each passing moment. Without thinking, I lean forward, closing the distance. Our lips meet in a fiery collision, the intensity of our combined desire burning hotter than the sun.
