We both thank him, and he walks into the kitchen.

Sadie looks out the window.

“So, are you going to tell me what happened?” I ask.

Usually, Sadie isn’t quiet like she was on the ride over here. Maybe it’s because she has so much on her mind, or maybe because her dad passed, but before all this, she was always talking to me about something. I’ve always appreciated her ability to keep our conversations going since I keep a lot to myself.

“You were right. They won’t give me the money. I didn’t even get to show her the plan I put together.”

“I wish I’d been wrong just this one time.”

One side of her lips tips up.

“Do you want to show me the plans?”

“No.” She glances toward the kitchen.

“Come on.”

“You’ll think it’s stupid, and after Mrs. Doyle, I need a breather from shitty news.”

Sabrina comes over and places two waters and some chips and salsa on the table. “Hey, you two. Lunch date?”

I groan, and Sadie kicks me under the table. Why is it such a big deal that we’re out for lunch?

I eye her with a warning glare, but she ignores me and smiles at Sabrina. “How are you?”

“I should be asking you that. I’m sorry to hear about your dad.” She gives Sadie a sympathetic look, then pulls out her pen and notepad.

“Thank you.” Sadie doesn’t bother looking at me, though my eyes remain on her, still waiting for the fallout I’m sure is coming. At some point, she’s going to break down when people keep talking to her about her dad. “I’ll have my usual.”

“Perfect.” Sabrina writes it down and looks at me. “You too?”

“Yeah, thanks.”

“It’ll be right up.” Sabrina leaves.

I watch her until she’s back in the kitchen. The restaurant isn’t busy today. There’s only one other couple in the back on the other side, though I don’t recognize them.

I turn my attention back to Sadie. “C’mon, show it to me.”

“Can we drop it? You’re supposed to be cheering me up.”

“When did I promise that?” I ask, leaning forward. I might not have said it, but we both know that’s why I showed up at the bank. “C’mon, I’m your best friend.”

Her gaze strays to her bag next to her. If she were my brother, I’d snatch it before she could stop me.

“Let’s just eat.”

“Sadie, I’m here to listen and talk this out.”

“I appreciate it, but I just want to wallow in some tacos.”

“At least tell me what Mrs. Doyle said.”

She blows out a breath and stares out the window again. “She said no. She said that my dad had been there multiple times, and we have nothing to give them if we can’t repay the money. So, that’s a dead end.”

I take a sip of my water, thinking maybe I should’ve let the topic be, allowed her to process it all and come up with her next plan. “Once we harvest the soybeans, you’ll get some money.”
