“You know you look rotten, don’t you?” Roseasked.

Eloise looked up from stirring the pot oftomato sauce. This was the fourth week Rose had been coming aroundon a Sunday to help her prepare food. Rose didn’t do anything, shemerely kept her company.

“I’m sorry, I woke up not feeling too greatthis morning, and in all honesty, I’m not feeling good rightnow.”

Rose frowned.

“What?” Eloise asked.

“It’s nothing.”

Eloise blew out a breath. “Tell me. Youdon’t have to be vague.”

“You don’t smell … sick.”

“Are you trying to tell me you think I’mlying about how I’m feeling?” she asked.

“No, no, not at all, it’s just that asickness has a certain smell and you don’t have it.” Rosestopped.

“Then I don’t know what is wrong withme.”

“I … you … uh … might be pregnant.”

This made Eloise spin around and focus onthe other woman. “No, there’s no way I can get pregnant.”

“You’ve been having sex with Beau, there isa way for you to get pregnant.”

“No, he said that … no. Humans andwolves don’tmate.”

“Doesn’t mean they can’t,” Rose said.“You’re pregnant.”

“You can tell that?”

“Well, no, I can’t tell that.”

“How can you tell I’m notsick? I feelsick.”

“Uh, I don’t know. You’re asking me to havea logical reason for me being able to do something?” Rose asked. “I’m a wolf, in the realworld. Should I be able to turn into a furry four-leggedanimal?”

“Yeah, and we live in the real world,”Eloise said. “I … what am I going to do?”

“Didn’t you guys get a test or something?”

“Yeah.”

Rose got to her feet. “Let me go and get you a test, and we cansee if I’m right.”

Eloise didn’t know if she could handle theresults of a pregnancy test.

“Okay,” she said.

There was no way she was ready to argue withRose. Besides, it was going to be wrong.

An hour later, Eloise felt like burstinginto tears.

“I thought women were supposed to be happywith this news,” Rose said. “You’re going to have a baby. A nicelittle Beau running around, or a little Eloise. She is going to beso cute. You’ll make cute babies.”

“How do I tell Beau?” Eloise asked.
