His head cocked, and I couldn’t miss the way something else wascockedto lift the furs below his belly.

“You fiend,” I shrieked.

Wait a second right there.

“I understand what you’re saying,” I whispered. “No more guttural gobbledygook. And you understand me.”

“And here I thought you were sick or something.”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“You kept wailing and thrashing, no matter what I said. Can you blame me for thinking there might be something wrong with you?”

“You were going to stuff you cock inside someone who might be sick?”

He winced. “Only with your permission, of course.”

“Well, I haven’t granted it.” I shrugged off the direction the conversation was heading. “Where am I?”

“In our home, my pretty one.” He smiled, his lips curling deliciously around his tusks.

“I’m not your pretty anything.”

“What else can I call you? You haven’t told me your name. I’m Aizor, traedor of the Indigan Zuldrux Clan. I introduced myself after I killed the abadeer in the cave, though you didn’t understand. You may call me Aizor. No title needed.”

“I’m Vanessa Smith, exclusive chef of Dria’s Diner, a fine dining establishment back on Earth. You can call me Vanessa, no title needed either.”

“Van-eesa.”

Close enough.

“Zuldrux. Is that your species?”

He pressed his fist against his chest. “The Zuldrux have lived in this area since longer than anyone can remember.”

Species, then.

“The crystal gods sent you to me, Van-eesa,” he said. “I saw you arrive from the sky. You should’ve waited for me to come for you instead of attracting the abadeer’s attention.”

“Crystal gods?” This was something straight out of a bizarre sci-fi movie.

“Our clan traedors beseeched the gods to give us mates.” He held out his arm, twisting it to show off the underside. “See? The gods told me you, my mate, would be with me soon, and I’d be given a sign to show me you were mine. This is the sign.”

I tiptoed forward, though I stayed beyond the reach of his muscular arms, and studied the marking on his forearm. “It’s a tattoo. Everyone has them. Not me, not yet. It means nothing.”

“A tat . . .” His smile only deepened. “It’s a sign from our crystal god.”

“You’re out of your mind.”

He frowned. “My mind is very much . . . within me still.”

I was beginning to believe this could be real. The robocops kidnapped me, placed me on the ship to Mars that somehow deviated to bring me here instead. Did that mean the other women I’d seen in pods were on this planet too?

“Besides, you have one too,” he said, pointing to my arm. “It’s god given, just like me.”

What was he . . .? I gaped down at my arm. “Where did this come from?” I shrieked, rubbing at the tattoo that eerily matched his. It was pretty if I was into couple’s tattoos—but I wasn’t. “Take it off.”

“The gods gave it to you to prove you’re mine,” he drawled. “Now do you believe?”
