My eyes open and light streams through the window, the sheer curtains barely cutting any of it and I groan, sitting up, rubbing my eyes.

And then I wrench my eyes open and stare around the room, stunned.

Because the guy who told me that he loved me is nowhere to be found.

I stand up and slip into my fluffy green robe, wandering around the room and searching. But his clothes are gone. His shoes are gone. All of him is gone.

Bam bam!

I run to the door, yanking it open, sure that he’s the one knocking and he just managed to lock himself out.

But it’s not him.

Petra stands there and her eyes widen. “Whoa! What the hell is going on? You look like you just lost your best friend and we both know that’s not true because that’s me.”

“Did you see Kade out there?” I dart out and peek around her on the porch. Like he’s hiding in the bushes or something.

“No, I didn’t see him. What’s going on? Why are you in bed so late? Did you…?” Her voice trails off and she wiggles her brows at me.

I roll my eyes. “Yeah. And he snuck out in the middle of the night like a rotten, sneaky, virginity-stealing bastard.”

She rears back and lifts her hands up. “Whoa! TMI, Promise! Too much information. Take a deep breath. Maybe he just went next door to get coffee or something. I know I can’t function without my first cup of coffee.”

I nod my head slowly. “Yeah. That’s possible.”

She nods her head and smiles at me then glares over at the driveway. “But if he didn’t and he just took off, I’m gonna really regret helping that son of a bitch.”

I freeze. “What does that mean? What did you do?”

She stills and her cheeks flush. “Well, um…”

“What. Did. You. Do?” I grit out between clenched teeth, pulling the collar of my robe tighter around my neck.

“Well, that app? That doesn’t really exist. I’ve actually been doing those matches.” She scrambles across the room and behind a chair when I stalk towards her. “Hey! I’m really good at making matches. And when I started looking at you and the way you two were kind of dancing around each other, I knew that you just needed a push. So I went to him and offered to set you two up.”

“Without telling me,” I snap, glaring at her. She kinda sinks in on herself and I almost feel bad for being so nasty with her.

But I stiffen my back when I think about last night and this morning.

“I don’t know what to say to you but I need some time to think about this.”

I turn my back and walk towards the door and hold it open. She sidles up to it and stares at me and tears glisten in her eyes. “I really thought he loved you. I just wanted you to be happy.”

I don’t look at her and she slips out the door and I slide to the ground, crying silently, my hands covering my eyes. Until I feel a soft butt against my hands and when I lift them to find Tigerlily staring at me, her body rumbling with purrs. Her paw touches my wet chin gently and I pick her up and cuddle her to me, sobbing into her fur while she rubs her head against me and rumbles in my ear.

“I wish you’d really drew blood on his ass, Tigerlily.”

She nods her head and I hold her close, sighing into her fur and closing my eyes. “If only his ass wasn’t so damn perfect, Tigerlily.”

And I close my eyes and sigh, my body curling up on the floor, the cat curled around my chin, the rumble of her purring lulling me back to sleep.

CHAPTER 8

Kade

“What the hell did you do?” Petra screams in front of the coffee shop, Deja Brew. Heads turn and I stagger back a step, holding the coffee and donuts out of her reach when she smacks at me.

“Hey, what the hell, Petra? What’s the matter with you?”
