“Still Ubering. Which reminds me, I gotta set up a ride after I shower.”

Koski shook his head. “Nah, fuck that. Let me take you home.”

“Um, yeah? That’d be…thanks, man.”

“Yeah. Is no problem.” He tapped Ryan on the arm before heading toward the showers, Ryan’s eyes accompanying him there. He averted them quickly when Koski turned around to look back at him and smirked.

Easy, killer.

You have a fucking boyfriend.

Speaking of which, Ryan grabbed his phone to check the time. It was already after 11 PM, since tonight’s game hadn’t started until almost 8:30 PM due to some technical issues with the arena’s sound system. He found the message Hayes had sent earlier in the night, smiling as he read it and typed a quick reply.

R: I’m excited to see you, too, baby. Miss you. How’d your practice go? Things any better with the guys?

He waited a few minutes for a reply, but it hadn’t come. And just as he was getting ready to make his way to the showers, his phone rang. Assuming it was Hayes, he answered and said, “Hey.”

What he wasn’t expecting to hear was Neil Halloway’s voice.

“Ryan?”

He could tell just from that one word that something wasn’t right, and his heart immediately sank into his stomach.

“Neil? What happened?”

“Ryan,” he repeated. “Don’t freak out, but there’s…there’s been an accident.”

Instant hot flash.

Instant anxiety.

Fucking breathe, Baylor.

“OK…” he managed to choke out.

“TK and Hayes. They wrecked a rented Lambo. TK was driving. Both of them were taken to the hospital. You should…I don’t know, but you should probably come.”

I’m So Sorry This Happened (16)

“I already fuckin’ told you everything I can remember!” Hayes yelled, wincing and grabbing his right side. “Shit. It hurts so bad!”

“Sit the fuck still and do not yell at me!” Osi scolded him, seated right by his friend’s side as he lay in an ER hospital bed. They’d just brought him back for an x-ray and were waiting on the results, but the doctor was pretty positive that Hayes had bruised at least a few ribs.

And based on what was left of the Lamborghini, he’s lucky he wasn’t dead.

“Tell me again what happened.”

Hayes tried to sit up again, couldn’t, and was beginning to grow agitated. “Where’s Teek? I need to see him.” He looked desperately at his former roommate, eyes pleading for reassurance. “Os. Is Trav OK? Tell me he’s OK.”

“I have not heard anything.”

“Fuck this,” Hayes grumbled, grabbing a hold of the bed rail and attempting to pull himself up while letting out a gurgled moan. Osi jumped up and blocked him from standing. “Get the fuck off me. I need to see him!”

“I will go check for him, OK? But you? Lay down and do not move. You understand?”

Hayes nodded, grabbing at his side as a few tears escaped his eyes.

Not only was he in pain from the accident and the fear of not knowing what was going on with his friend, but he’d missed his last two alarms and was starting to come down hard.
