“Well, seven is better than none. Where did you find them?”

“Kalispell. A local auction house contacted us about them. I’m going there tomorrow to bring them back. I’m sorry we couldn’t retrieve all ten.”

“Don’t apologize, son. I’m just grateful to have seven back.”

“I am too, but it would have been nice to get them all.”

“It’s alright. Replacing three is better than replacing ten.” Art chuckled.

Creed grinned. “That’s true.”

They finished their coffee and Creed got up to leave.

“I’m not sure what time I’ll be by tomorrow. Should I call you?”

“No need for that. I’ll be here all day. I hardly ever leave the ranch.”

“Okay then. See you tomorrow.”

Art extended his hand for a shake and Creed obliged.

“Thanks for everything you’re doing to help get my cattle back.”

“It’s my job.” Creed grinned.

“I know it is, but you guys go above and beyond, and us farmers and ranchers truly appreciate it.”

“We’re happy to do it. See you tomorrow.” Creed put on his hat, exited the house, and drove back to the office. On the way, he noticed that it had started snowing. “Great, just what I needed before a trip to Kalispell.”

Later that evening, Creed sat in his recliner watching the news to check the weather forecast for tomorrow. He decided to call Abbie.

“Hey there,” she answered cheerfully.

“Hi, sweetheart. How was your day?”

“Good. And yours?”

“Well, I have good news and bad news.”

“What’s the good news?”

“We found seven of your grandfather’s missing cattle. The bad news is that we’re still missing three of them. Tomorrow, Luke and I are headed to Kalispell to bring them back.”

“That’s wonderful! Does Pap know?”

“Yes, I went to see him earlier today. Hopefully we can find those other three. Once the thieves were confronted about the stolen cattle, they took off, but the auction house has CCTV footage so we might be able to track them down.”

“Who’s Luke?”

“Luke McCallister. Another agent.”

“I see. Please be careful. I think it’s calling for more snow.”

“Yeah, it is. I’m keeping an eye on the weather report. It looks like there will only be light snow until tomorrow night.”

“That’s good to hear, but still, stay safe.”

“I will. I just wanted to give you a heads up in case you try to reach me, and I don’t answer right away.”
