I scoff to myself. And I’m also scoffing at the gorgeous remark because I’ve put no effort into my appearance today other than running a brush through my hair this morning when we had the world’s strangest breakfast, ever.

I put my plate and glass in the dishwasher and walk down the hall with my phone and the book in my hand. Not that I think I can get into it tonight.

A few minutes later, Derek joins me in his bed with his book, bringing in two bottles of water, setting one on the table on the side I’m on, turning on the lamp, then setting the other bottle on the opposite table.

He flicks the ceiling light off and gets in bed, then says, “I’ve seen him wheel into bed with his own water a few times. Saw you walk in with two bottles each time you went to bed first, setting him up on his side of the bed. Why the fuck he didn’t think about anyone besides himself when you were putting effort in is beyond me.”

He gets himself settled, opens his book, and resumes reading.

I set my book on the table beside me, face flaming.

“You wanna watch TV?” he asks, casually.

“No,” I snap, then flick the lamp off, turn onto my side and stare into space, feeling the grimace on my face.

“Is my light bothering you?” Derek asks.

“No,” I say.

“Sure?” he checks.

“I’m sure,” I answer.

And then I realize I’m supposed to be acting bitchy. I’m supposed to be behaving like a shrew who’s difficult to get along with and who a man would see as impossible to live with. I guess I’ll try again tomorrow.

There are a lot of things bothering me right now, not the least of which is him pointing out yet another flaw in my relationship with Adam. But miraculously, I somehow manage to fall asleep almost immediately.

The room is bright, and I’ve been awake for a while, watching her sleep. I seem to sleep better when she’s beside me. I’m feeling well-rested. And big things are happening in my chest.

When I woke to her beside me, I instantly knew I’d never tire of watching her sleep. She looks like an angel. She’s wearing a pair of the pajamas I had brought in. Royal blue silk ones. I run my hand up her leg and feel the silk between my fingers.

No, she didn’t choose to come to me like I wanted, but she is here in my bed. The rest will come. I’ll make sure of that.

Today, she meets the rest of my family. She also gets my surprise, which I’m beyond excited to show her.

Her eyes open and stare into mine.

“Mornin’,” I greet, my hand finding its way up to her face. I rub my thumb over her cheekbone as my fingers move through her hair.

Those blue eyes stare sleepily for a moment, then seem to snap out of a daze before shooting me a look of disdain as she rolls away from me to rush to the bathroom.

After a few minutes, I hear the shower, so I decide to join her.

She’s locked me out. That’s okay, this flimsy doorknob lock is no match for my desire.

She’s rinsing her hair when I join her wearing nothing but a smile.

“What are you doing?” she growls, trying in vain to shield her nudity with her arm and a big bath sponge.

“Saying good morning to my future wife,” I inform as I drop to my knees while grabbing her by the hips and steadying her against the tiled wall so I can bury my face between her legs. And I do, just before she manages to clamp them shut. I swipe my tongue through her folds. I taste a little bit of soap and she stumbles a little, trying to protest, so I steer her until she sits on the shower bench, keeping a firm hold of her while continuing to work her with my fingers and my mouth.

She keeps trying to fight me, so I lean back and give her a reprimanding look as I smack her clit. She jolts, mouth dropping open in shock.

“How dare you!” Chloe gasps.

“I dare like this,” I state and give it another smack.

“Derek!” she shouts, but the way she does it fails to hide how she really feels about it.
