“Believe it,” I say. “That fifty grand fucking hurt.” I laugh and lean up against the glass. It’s not a good memory, and I leave out some of the tougher bits, like how that game left me so fucking broke I had to sell my car to make rent that month. Things improved for me after that, and I don’t play cards with mobsters anymore, but that still haunts me.

“What about you?” I ask her. “Any stories about you losing?”

She grins at me, shakes her head. “Nope, none. I’m a winner, plain and simple.”

I laugh and step closer to her, almost by instinct. Without thinking about it, she tilts her chin up at me. My hand finds her lower back, I pull her closer, and I kiss her.

Right here in the party, where anyone can see. Fortunately we’re off to the side, and the place is crowded enough that we’re just two more people in the sea of people, but I can’t believe what I’m doing. It just felt so natural to kiss her like that, all the signs were pointing toward it, but still. Henry would cut off my balls if he knew I was doing this.

It feels fucking good though. Her taste is incredible, and her body pressed against mine just feels right, like she belongs there. We slowly break apart and she blinks up at me.

“That was surprising,” she says, taking a deep breath.

“I’m full of surprises.” I run my hands through her hair and she leans into me again. For a second, I think she’s going to want more.

But instead, she pulls away. “Hold that thought,” she says. I watch as she walks quickly away, disappearing into the crowd.

I stand there, watching as she goes, her ass cute as fuck. I want to see her stripped bare, taste that skin, but I know that’s not happening tonight. She’s running away from me right now, and I don’t really blame her.

I’m the bad boy of the group, the guy she should stay away from. Sure, I take what I want, but she should know better than to let me kiss her.

I sigh and sip my whisky. I probably won’t be seeing her again tonight.

I head off to join another group, trying to forget her, but that kiss lingers. I catch sight of her later on in the evening, and when I wink at her, she blushes a deep scarlet red. It’s so fucking cute, but I leave her alone. I know better than that.

Toward the end of the night, I’m talking to this cute model girl that wants to be a country singer. She’s totally vapid, a little boring, and she’s going on about how her daddy is a great agent, all this showbiz bullshit. I’m half listening, nodding, grunting, whatever.

The other guys are all still around, everyone except Henry. I wonder if he found someone else.

The girl I’m talking to, shit, I can’t remember her name, leans in toward me. “Danny?” she asks.

“Daniel,” I correct.

“Sure, Daniel.” She looks up at me with her big fuck-me eyes, and I know what’s coming. “So you’re like, staying here, right?”

“Right,” I say.

“Why don’t you give me a little tour? I mean, maybe show me your room?”

She couldn’t be more obvious. Well, maybe she could shove her hand down my pants, grab my cock, and demand that I fuck her. This is probably preferable to that, if I’m being honest.

“Maybe another time,” I say, turning away from her. “I gotta do something.”

I walk away without another word. I can tell she’s stunned and pissed, but whatever. I don’t know why I’m walking away. She was a sure thing, and I haven’t slept with anyone yet. Henry’s winning, as far as I can tell, and I should be more into this stupid game since my time’s at stake here.

But I just don’t feel like it. I keep thinking about that kiss with Emily, and I realize that she’s the only one I want to taste tonight. She’s the most off-limits here, but I can’t help it.

That’s just my fucking luck. But fortunately, I’m very good at turning my luck around. I think things are going to change, and soon, especially if that kiss is any indication.
