One of us would need to go to the grocery store to get some kid-friendly food like cereal and chicken tenders. If all else failed, I could at least give him a peanut butter sandwich.

"Would you like eggs and bacon or just one of those?"

He tilted his face up as he thought, and he said, "I'll do some bacon."

I nodded. As I went into the fridge, I noticed my tea eggs. So I pulled out that baggie in addition to the bacon to help myself to some easy protein, especially if I had only time for a quickie with Nat. Yes, I was supposed to be in dad mode, but I still had sex on my mind.

As I pulled some of the bacon stripes apart and onto the plate to microwave them, Eric reached over and went, "What's those?"

"It's a Chinese tea egg. My mom used to make them for me for breakfast."

"Really? What are they like? They look so weird."

I put the plate of bacon into the microwave, and I fished out an egg. As I started to peel it, I explained, "Well, it's just a hard-boiled egg that's been marinated in some spice and tea. They're really good and so much better than plain hard-boiled eggs."

Thanks to the eggs being pre-cracked, it was so easy to peel, too. I held the bag out. Eric pulled out an egg and started to peel it, dripping some of the tea onto the counter. I pulled a plate out and handed it to him.

Eric scrunched his face and tried the egg. I was convinced he was going to hate it based on that first expression, but it quickly morphed into one of pleasure. He pointed at the egg. "That's pretty awesome. Can I have another one?"

"Sure, buddy."

He went into the bag and got another one, and quickly started to peel the egg. He devoured the egg even quicker than the first.

I went to the living room and turned on the TV. I realized I had no clue what kids wanted to watch. My TV was still on the NHL network from watching one of the other games. I was about to change the channel when the kid came up and asked, "Can I watch that?"

"Sure."

Eric flopped onto the sofa, and I went back to the kitchen to check on the bacon. It was almost done in the microwave, so I tore off a couple paper towels. As soon as the microwave beeped, I blotted the bacon and then chucked the paper towels into the trash.

I put took the plate to Eric. "Let that cool for a couple minutes. I'm going to go back to Ms. Natalie, but please shout if you need anything."

I emphasized the words shout. I didn't want the kid walking in on us having fun.

Eric didn't even look up at me. His eyes were transfixed on the highlights from my last game. I wanted to get away since I had seen enough film of me skating for my liking.

I trotted upstairs. Natalie stirred, and I quickly locked the door.

Chapter 42

Natalie

We ended up having Eric for much longer than I thought. Thankfully, Luke had a couple of unrelated warrants for his arrest and was kept in jail much longer than the twenty-four holding period. So it'd been about a week of having Eric in our care. It seemed like we were in a natural routine of things. Spencer and I would make Eric some lunch, we would visit Annette at the hospital, go to school, and then stop at the hospital or go to hockey practice. Then, on Spencer's game nights, we would go to the game.

Yet tonight was going to be one of the last nights with Eric. Annette was finally getting discharged, and we found an apartment for her to live in. It was in Eric's school district, but it was something she could afford on her own. Now, it was just a matter of her seeing what happened next.

I was making some mac and cheese from a box. Something that I found so disgusting but Eric adored.

Spencer walked downstairs and wrapped his arms around my waist from behind. He leaned his head down onto my shoulder.

"You're awfully flirty this evening," I purred as I leaned into his body.

He chuckled as he started to kiss my ear, which only caused me to squirm from the way it tickled. There were days when he seemed to relish torturing me with tickles. He whispered, "That's because you're too hot to handle, and I want to make sure you know that I adore you."

That's when I heard Eric go, "Eww. You guys are so gross."

Spencer turned and said, "When you get older, you will realize kissing isn't so gross."

I buried a laugh into his chest, but it was one of those happy moments, and I couldn't think of anything better than memories like this. The fact that Spence didn't even blink when he found out that I couldn't have kids and wanted to adopt kids was amazing. The two other times that I’d revealed that fact, it basically was the start of the end of those relationships. It was a dealbreaker that sucked since I couldn’t change the fact that I couldn’t have kids.
