It was the first time I uttered the fact that I thought Luke followed me to the rink, but how else would he know that I was at the ice rink? But what I couldn't understand was why he followed me instead of Annette. I guess, in a way, it was a small miracle that he chose to follow me since god knew what the repercussions would have been if he knew Annette was hiding money from him.

"By whom? And please tell me there was a police report."

"Luke Donaldson, and yes. No one was arrested, but the police came. He accused me of kidnapping his son."

The lawyer nodded and didn't seem too surprised by my words. "I have to ask, did you kidnap his son?"

"No!" Spencer huffed out. "We're friends with the kid's mother. While they were at the shelter, Eric joined the hockey team that I sponsor. When they returned to his home, we helped take Eric to practice and games. I would have done it like usual, but I had a game."

I noticed how Spencer refused to call Luke by his first name. But whatever worked.

"When you say shelter, what kind?"

"Domestic violence shelter that I help to support," Spencer said as his hand wrapped around my body and pulled me close to him. It was the quiet strength that I needed.

"So he's already a loose cannon. That will make it easier to get a protection order."

After giving him the pertinent contact information, the lawyer put his phone away and stood up. "Well, that should be everything. If you spot this guy again, please make sure that you contact both me and the police."

Carter ushered his lawyer out of the house. Then it was just me and Spence. He lifted me up and said, "Come on, you've been on the verge of crashing for a while now. Let's take you up to bed."

I nodded, but I felt like a terrible girlfriend who didn't want to do anything but sleep.

He laid me down onto the bed, then stripped off his clothes. All that remained was his black boxers, which he always wore on game day.

He must have sensed that I wasn't in the mood to do anything since all he did was scoop me back into his arms and cradle me.

It didn't take long for me to fall asleep tucked against his arms since it felt so good and easy.

Chapter 34

Spencer

Once everything was said and done, my nerves were on edge. After watching Natalie sleep and my arm going dead from cradling her, I decided to spend time burning off my excess energy. I kissed Nat's head one last time and carefully edged her off my arm.

I didn't dare to leave the bed until I was sure that Natalie would stay asleep. Thankfully, she didn't even stir.

So I carefully went downstairs. I went into my gym to grab my boxing gloves and the manikin. I wrapped my hands and threw them into the gloves.

From the moment my dad first laid his hands on my mom when I was a kid, I'd been drawn to boxing and martial arts.

Days like today, it felt so good to just have an outlet for my anger.

I continued to punch into the manikin over and over again.

I just lost myself with each and every punch.

There was something about that sound of landing a good solid hit.

After an hour or so, I was exhausted, and I was less angry about what had happened at the ice rink. I still couldn't believe that Natalie was followed to the rink and how much of a loose cannon Luke was.

I wished there was something I could do for Annette and Eric, but I knew that assholes like Luke and my father would be monitoring her phone and be on high alert. Sadly, there was a good chance that he thought that Natalie was something more than a friend to Annette, even though she was completely loyal to that asshat.

After finishing my boxing session, I unwrapped my hands and checked my phone, and I noticed that Carter had texted.

You awake?

Yeah. Just finished a sparring session on Jim.
