The tank top I have on feels obnoxious now after hearing those men’s comments about my body. I’ve never felt as self-conscious about it as I do now, despite the fact that I know I look decent and I make good money off it.

He finally sighs. “You are in a world of trouble, little girl. What the fuck am I going to do with you now?”

More tears spill out of my eyes, and my entire body starts shaking.

“I don’t know who those people are.” My voice is barely higher than a whisper. “They said something about their boss wanting me. I don’t know who their boss is.”

Hawk shakes his head in awe, most likely at my stupidity.

“I have good news and I have bad news,” he tells me. “Which one do you want first?”

“I don’t know,” I sniffle out.

“Fair enough,” he chuckles, but he doesn’t look amused. “The bad news is that those people want to sell you to a sex trafficking ring.”

My eyes widen in shock, and I am not capable of forming words. That is the business Hawk is in. All this time I thought I was helping to take him and his posse down, but they’re coming after me.

“W-what is the good news?”

He winks at me, which only serves to scare me more.

“The good news is two-fold. One, they are not smart enough to pull this shit off. And two…”

He looks me dead in the eyes, determination obvious on his face.

“I will not allow those fuckers to hurt a hair on your head.”

Things are suddenly moving a lot faster. Bricks is panicking over losing a couple of big contracts. The only way to make some fast cash is to sell a few girls. It makes sense why he would attempt to kidnap Ruby. He has no use of her anymore as I haven’t been telling her much in the last week or so. He’s got all that he thinks he needs out of her, and now it’s time to move on.

When he sells her, he doesn’t have to worry about her running her mouth and betraying him by sharing that he helped him in this mission. He also makes some cash in the process, and everybody is happy.

Except for the fact that his problem has now become my problem. Allowing the Steel Lizards to hurt Ruby in any way, shape or form is not an option.

I’m not sure how I got to this revelation. It’s built over the last few weeks as I spent more time with her. I got to know her a lot better, and I understood that she got caught in an impossible situation where she felt like betraying me would be the only way out.

The thing is, there is no actual betrayal since we are nothing to each other. I’m not even sure what’s stopping me from offing her myself.

She whimpers from her spot by the wall, bringing my attention back to her. Lately, every time I look at her, I get this painful pang in my chest. I know that our time together is almost over, but I don’t want it to be.

My mission here is done as Devereaux declared we gave Bricks enough rope to hang himself twice. Prez told me it’s time for me to head home. Neither one of them told me what would happen to Ruby Santiago once I left. Now, as I look at her, I understand there is only one outcome for her, and that is for her to die.

“Do you need anything from your house?”

She jumps when I ask her the question. She shakes her head no and whimpers again. My eyes go to her bloody feet.

“What happened to your shoes?”

“I lost them,” she cries out. “When I was running from them.”

I resist the urge to roll my eyes at that. She was most likely wearing her flip-flops just like I saw her countless of times lately as I waited for her to get home from the club.

“Do you think I can go back home?” she asks, sounding terrified to even breathe anymore.

If I was a different person, I’d lie to her right now. Alas, I’m not, so I give it to her straight.
