I’m not sure what I have and what I don’t because I can’t think clearly at the moment.

“Can you drive? I’ll give you a ride home if not, but you’ll have to wait until my shift is over.”

On shaky legs, I stand up and start walking toward the door. When I almost trip over my own feet, I stop and slide out of my high heels, losing almost half a foot in height when I do so.

I don’t say anything to JJ, and I don’t wait for him to follow me either. Blindly, I reach the dressing room that’s now busy with all the girls whose sets continue throughout the night.

As soon as I sit at my table, my eyes stare in the mirror at the large bruise forming on my neck.

“Whoa, girl, you must’ve had one hell of a time back there.”

Lala plops her skinny ass in the empty chair next to me. She then leans over and rests her chin on my shoulder, staring at me in the mirror. The move looks sensual to others, I’m sure.

“Bricks told me that he talked to you.”

The smile she gives me looks deranged.

“We have to help them take the Savages out, Ruby.” She caresses the skin on my arms. “They are bad people.”

I don’t dare to say a word, mostly because my brain is not functioning properly now, anyway.

“Bricks said I can have Puck if I help him. I love Puck so much. I can make him happy, I just know it.”

I remain quiet and let her talk until she is called up on stage.

“We’ll chat later, babe.” She kisses my shoulder again. It takes everything in me not to cringe.

I’m not sure for how long I stare at myself in the mirror. My entire body feels stiff when I finally get up and start getting ready to go home.

As I walk toward my car, I realize with a start that I have to move now, again. I guess I am meant to constantly be on the run, never to live an easy life.

Cursed.

FIVE

Hawk

It’s been a week since the last time I stepped foot in this strip club. As a rule, I prefer to go to the one that’s on the other side of Austin. It is in our territory, and we recently bought it. In a way, it’s like a second home to us now.

So, instead of enjoying what our girls have to offer, here I am, in enemy territory, on a mission to feed this one stripper stories that she can share with the fuckers that Devereaux wants dead. Can’t say that I blame him.

Now, as I sit on my bike outside in their parking lot, I wonder if this fucking plan is going to work. Bricks has never been stupid despite his most recent actions. Why is he so desperate to get rid of his own son?

I bring a cigarette to my lips and give it a long pull. Wrecker dying would be of no benefit to their club, unless there’s been some internal war that we are not aware of.

Wrecker is back from his adventures in Illinois. From what I heard, he is not looking too well after his accident. The kid he brought with him is a son he allegedly had with a club whore. Talk about being a dumbass.

I throw the cigarette to the ground and step on it before pushing it to the side and into the pile of sand that is there for just this purpose. When I get off my bike, a coughing fit hits me out of nowhere, reminding me that I really should quit smoking. I’ve never had issues like this before.

Once I’ve calmed down, I finally make my way into the club. The music hits my ears as soon as I step inside, making me want to turn around and walk back out. The lights are weird and hurt my eyes.

All in all, I am not feeling this at all, and I wish I was anywhere but here. The only sort of bright spot is the fact that I will see Ruby again. Although, I am not sure why I’d be excited to see her at all. Yes, she’s hot and I could fuck her all day and night, but, for all intents and purposes, she is also the enemy. Her association with Bricks makes her a mortal enemy at that.

“Welcome,” a sultry voice greets me as soon as I turn a corner to head to the bar. A strong drink is in order.

As I wait for the bartender to bring it, I run my eyes over all the patrons in the place. Some I’ve seen before, but I don’t have a true sense of who’s a regular here since it’s not normally my turf.

“Hey, handsome,” someone whispers into my ear. “How about a private dance?”
