“Fucking hell, we did it, boys and girls,” I throw my arms up in the air and look around the room. Everybody starts cheering and hollering, and I let out a huge sigh of relief.

It’s been an intense two days of us chasing our own tails a lot until things finally fell into place. Who the hell knew that a tiny little microchip could cause so much trouble? Also, who the hell thought that there would be a shortage of said microchip? Just mind boggling.

“I’m going home, Barb,” I tell my assistant when I turn around to walk back to my office.

“About time, boss,” she teases me.

I smile and hurry up to grab my cell phone and briefcase that are sitting on my desk. I frown when I see I have no new messages from Hunter. Once my phone was charged, I noticed two new messages from her. She had waited for me that first night, with dinner no less.

I texted her back as soon as I saw them, and I also let her know I’d be gone for another day. She never said anything back. That’s when I notice that my messages to her don’t show as being sent. There’s just a red exclamation point by each one.

“What the fuck.”

I run into my IT guy right as I reach the elevators. “Just the man I needed to see.” I shove my phone in his face to fix it. I am usually very good and up to date when it comes to new technology. I do run a company that makes computer games after all, so I need to be. But I got no patience for it now.

“Here you go,” he gives me the phone back after thirty seconds max. “It just needed to be rebooted, texts just went through.”

I nod in thanks and get in the elevator. What a damn cluster. I debate all the way down if I should uber it home or just walk. When I step into the sunshine, I decide to walk. I need some damn sun in my face after two days when I barely saw the outside at all.

“Mr. Cavanaugh,” the doorman greets me when I make it to my building. We exchange some hockey stats as I walk toward the elevators, and then I am finally on my way up to see Hunter.

I got so much clarity as far as our relationship goes, that I think these two days away from each other had to have been the best decision ever. I can’t wait to tell her all my revelations and also how much I love her.

“Hunter, I’m home,” I call out as soon as I open the door. I missed her like crazy, and I can’t wait to wrap myself around her body for the foreseeable future.

I close the door behind me, expecting to see her running my way, but there’s nothing. The odd silence is disturbing, and I can almost feel that she is not here. Maybe she went out shopping, I muse. I decide to take a shower and change out of this stuffy suit, be nice and fresh by the time she is home.

When I walk by the dining room, I notice the table all set up, a couple of half melted candles sitting in the middle. I remember her mentioning dinner. Two days ago.

My heart starts beating a little faster at the thought of her having waited for me with what looks like a romantic setup. And I never showed up, called or texted. This is bad, I think to myself.

I make it to the bedroom, dropping the briefcase by the door. No sense in unpacking it since my business in New York is done now, and we’ll go back home to Lake County by the end of the week. Maybe I’ll take her out around town before then. Or we’ll spend all the time we have left here in bed. I miss her so much.

Speaking of the bed, I notice that it’s perfectly made, no wrinkle in place. Everything on Hunter’s side, on the nightstand, looks to have been cleared out, like she was never here.

“What the fuck is going on,” I mutter under my breath.

I rush to the closet and let out a sigh of relief when I see her clothes still hanging there. But then I see that it all looks too perfect. No random shoes on the floor or tops she’s changed her mind about hanging off the doorknob.

My cell phone starts ringing, almost scaring me shitless. It’s Van.

“Is Hunter with Chloe?” I say in way of greeting.

“Dude,” he sounds like he feels sorry for me. “What the fuck did you do?”

“What do you mean?”

“Chloe just called me that she took Hunter to the airport because she wanted to go back home,” Van explains, making my heart drop to my stomach. “Chloe also said that you were a real piece of shit, and that I should not be friends with you anymore. She said you got a sidepiece. Care to explain?”

“What the fuck!” I roar over the line. They can probably hear me across town.

“Hunter saw you with some chick in a diner,” Van explains. “That’s kinda lame, dude. You can’t get any more low maintenance than Hunter. She would’ve gone to eat with you in a diner, if that floats your boat.”

“Van,” I try to interrupt him but he’s having none of it.

“So now I am not allowed to talk to you. I still will though, but we can’t let Chloe catch wind of it. I love that girl. And she loves my dick. But if she catches me with you, she might cut it off, then she’ll leave me. I can’t live without her, Zach. I love her so much.”
