“You’re not into the party scene, I take it?” Hunter continues to watch me, a more serious look taking over her face now.

“No, I am way over it.”

“So, if you came over with a girl, what are you doing here talking to me?” I am obviously not scoring any points with that piece of information.

“We parted ways the second I saw you.” I figure that honesty is the best policy. Her eyes widen in surprise. I can tell that she didn’t see that one coming.

“You ditched her just like that?”

“Well, no, not really. She was standing in front of me, flirting with the bartender. I paid for her drinks and thanked her for her time. Then, I headed your way. I was hoping to spend some time with you if you’re interested.”

“I… wow,” she shakes her head at me in awe. “I can honestly say that I have never been in this type of situation.”

“What, where a man was so taken by your beauty, he forgot all others and headed over your way?” I am teasing her, but I seriously forgot who I was here with the second my eyes landed on her.

“Yeah,” she bursts into laughter, and I love the sound of it. “That.”

We remain quiet for a few moments, just staring at each other. The noise in the room doesn’t seem to be as distracting anymore. The drunken college students roaming around don’t bother me one bit as I stare into her beautiful eyes.

“Hunter what?” I finally ask when I notice she is getting a little flustered by my intense gaze on her face.

“What?” she tries to shake herself off like she’d been in a trance.

“Your name,” I clarify. “Hunter what?”

“Oh,” she blushes and puts both hands on her cheeks. “Hunter Montgomery.”

“And who are you here with, Hunter Montgomery?” I fish for information, trying to find out if I need to kick anyone’s ass to get this girl.

“Nobody in particular. My roommate ditched me,” she shrugs and doesn’t seem to be fazed by it.

“I’d love to buy you dinner in a less…” I look around, trying to find what to say without sounding insulting. It’s obvious that she is a student, and this is her turf. “Chaotic enviroment,” I settle on. Best I could do.

“Well, Zach Cavanaugh, I’d love to.” I give myself an imaginary high five. “However, you’re definitely a stranger…”

“Stranger danger,” I chuckle under my breath, and she nods in amusement.

“Exactly. That’s why I hope you understand why I am not exactly keen on leaving here with you. I watch Dateline, you know.” She sounds like she’s teasing me, but she’s definitely serious. And I don’t blame her.

“Very smart of you,” I commend her. “How about if I let you take a picture of me, and you can text it to whoever you want, along with my stats? Just in case I turn out to be a creep.”

“That easy, huh?” A corner of her lips lifts into the beginning of a smile, and I am momentarily mesmerized by the dimple making an appearance there.

“I am all about the easy,” I bob my head up and down. “Plus, I really like you. And I’d love to know you better.”

“Okay then, Zach Cavanaugh. Say cheese,” she puts her phone up and I give her my best smile.

“Can I take you out now? Somewhere where we won’t get beer spilled all over us if we make the wrong move?”

“I thought you’d never ask,” she turns and walks toward the exit with purpose.

“Shouldn’t you tell anyone that you’re leaving?” I thought all girls were trained to do that. Walk in packs. Don’t talk to strangers. Don’t let strangers buy you drinks or food. And here she is, walking away with me, a virtual stranger, ready to go out for me to buy her food and drinks, while her friends stay behind.

“The girl I came with sort of ditched me. And I don’t like any of the other people in there,” she talks over her shoulder. “I was trying to come up with a way to leave undetected.”

“Glad to be of service then.” I put my hand on the small of her back and direct her toward where my car is parked. “Let’s have some real fun.”
