“In the PI business?” Cora’s head bobs up and down. She looks exhausted.

“Security,” Gwen corrects with a gentle smile.

“Get any sleep last night?” I ask, trying not to openly gawk at her.

“Yeah,” she says as she yawns.

This causes both Gwen and me to do the same.

Gwen shakes her head. “She will tonight.”

“Doc Shaw doesn’t have to put me up. I’ll be fine.”

“It’s CeCe,” I correct her and add, “I want you to stay—at least until they find him.”

“Find him?” she asks, confused.

Shit.

“I want to find out his real name and see if he has a criminal history.” Gwen nods toward the door. “I’m going to go talk to Marks. You two try not to worry about all this so you can take care of your clients. I’ll take Elle.”

“She’s good here for now.”

Truth be told, she makes me feel calmer.

“Oh my God, is that Roman Hart’s puppy?” Cora asks, squatting down to pet her.

“He was going to leave her at a kennel. She’s too young, and besides that, it was a place I’d never heard of. You ever hear of Cozy Canine Cottage?”

She looks up at me, her eyes—Chloe’s eyes, our eyes—staring back at me. “No, never.”

I clear my throat. “I want to look into it.”

She stands up. “Okay, I need a distraction from the shitshow I’ve created, so I’m gonna ask even though I shouldn’t. Are you dating Roman Hart?”

I bit back a smile. “Not technically, but that’ll change on Wednesday.”

“Are you going on a date with him, like a real date?”

“I am.” I smile. At least I hope so.

“Oh my God, my boss is dating Roman Hart.” She squats back down and gives Elle some more attention. “How cool is that?”

Elle’s tail thumps on the tiled floor.

“It’s really cool, but even cooler, your dad is dating my boss, who is seriously a catch. Mostly because he has a cool dog—you, Elle girl.”

“I’m going to totally hate it when you get done with community college and head off to whatever university is lucky enough to grab you up.”

Still petting Elle, she shakes her head. “Not sure I have it in me.”

“Trust me; you do,” I say, hoping to encourage her.

“I still need to work,” she says a little quieter.

“If you go to Rutgers, you could still do weekends here.”

She looks up at me. “One day a month now, right?”
