“How is she supposed to watch out for herself and Aggie if she doesn’t know?” I ask, trying to keep my cool.

“Danny’s watching out for her. We’re watching out for her,” Marks answers.

“And when she’s in Walton?”

“Danny’s family and a few men in town know?—”

“The same men you had on him in California?” I snap, pissed.

His lips form a straight line.

“Oh my God, did he kill?—”

“No. Jesus, CeCe, no.” York shakes her head, and I see her look toward Roman’s place.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see him on his porch in his thinking man pose.

“Let’s get you to work. I’ll fill you in on our way.” She nods to her vehicle.

“Morning, Red,” Roman calls to me as I head toward York’s SUV.

In an attempt to appear normal, I wave. “Morning.”

Inside the vehicle, I turn my body and look at her. “How did they lose him?”

She turns on the vehicle and puts it in reverse. “Marks was in California when it happened. I insisted we hire someone to fill in so he could get some sleep. He’s pissed at himself. It’s not his fault. The man we hired was parked out front of the place William”—my father—“was staying—at a very large estate of some director who had been his client at one time. Marks and Lawson knew William’s schedule; they were on top of it. Apparently, he slipped out the back of the estate during the night. Marks returned to post before he typically left in the morning to head to play golf, which he did every day. He never came out.” She pulls out of the driveways.

This makes sense. He played golf all the time. It was the nights he came home drunk when we pretended to be asleep. Sometimes, it worked; other times, he woke Chloe up and insisted she sleep in her own room. I didn’t understand it then, but now, I know why. Part of me wished I didn’t, but a bigger part of me wants him back behind bars where he has no protection and someone who hates his kid fucks him up so bad that he rocks in a fucking corner, scared of what may happen next.

“The man who works for us in California has tech connections. We know William didn’t purchase a plane ticket, but then again, some of his known contacts have private planes.”

I shake my head as I hug my body.

“There’s good news, CeCe. He missed his parole appointment, which means he’s going back to jail when we catch him—and we will. We’re not taking on any other jobs until he’s back behind bars.”

“I appreciate that, Gwen, and if Chloe knew, she would, as well. The fact that you and Marks are here, and Chloe and Danny are going back, it’s telling.”

She doesn’t deny it. “You’re here, and so is the child Chloe had at fifteen.”

“You know who she is.”

She shakes her head. “Not for certain, but we will very soon.”

“I don’t want any lies. I want to know what’s going on. I?—”

“You will, but you need to let us know where you are at all times. No walking to and from work alone. If you see something—hell, even if you have a feeling—you tell us.”

“Okay.”

She pulls out behind Wags. “We’d like to install a security system here, too.”

“Okay.” I open the door, and she turns off the vehicle.

“Until it’s installed, I want to walk you in and check the place out.”

“It’s going to scare my Wags family. I won’t have them living like that.”

“Not if you’re up at the ass crack of dawn every day—they won’t even notice. Better yet, introduce me as your cousin who’s in town visiting for a couple of weeks.” She nods to the building out back. “Or I’m here to work on plans for expanding the business.”
