“Did you get his number?”

I shake my head. “But that wasn’t the assignment the girls gave me.”

“Oh my God, I love them.” She laughs.

“Yeah, me, too.”

“Good to let people in, isn’t it?”

I nod.

“Okay, so what sick shit are you watching these days?” she asks, grabbing the remote.

Monday

I would have been late today if Danny and Chloe hadn’t insisted on driving me to work. I just couldn’t get enough of the sweetest hugs Aggie gave me. I would like to say it was all me, but it was the huge stuffed monkey that I’d grabbed at Costco, so they should get the credit, and Hudson should get a little bit of it, too, because he insisted that the monkey was the better choice than the giant bear.

“Who doesn’t want to love on a monkey?” he’d said.

Why am I just now realizing that it was possibly a sexual innuendo that I missed? I swear I’m going to kick him in the balls now because he ruined my joy. Asshole.

The day has dragged, as Mondays tend to do, although it’s worse because I just want to be home with them and bond with Aggie, sans the monkey. I’m even more determined now than ever to be the cool aunt. I want her to be able to tell me all the things she might not be able to tell her mother, which makes no sense because if I’d had my mom, I know I’d have told her everything. And Chloe is no doubt one of those moms her children will feel safe enough to tell everything to. But still, it’s supposedly a thing, and I’m here for it. If Aggie is into fashion, I’m sure Chloe will have it all handled, but my girls can give me advice, too. Or I can just play to my strengths … which I’m not sure would be appreciated by a kid or teen because the one thing I know—because my friends tell me so—is that if someone wants an honest answer, they come to me. My friends don’t know why that’s so important to me, only Chloe does.

After I lock up, I shower and change at Wags and am ready for the game, which we are heading to immediately.

At six o’clock, I receive a text from Chloe.

Chloe

Take your time. Just want you to know we’re parked out back when you’re ready. Hugs.

I shoot her back a text.

Me

OMW.

When I open the door to climb in, I see that Aggie isn’t with them.

Danny chuckles. “Told you she’d be disappointed it was just us.”

“Just surprised, is all.” I shut the door behind me.

“Pope and Whit’s oldest, Nora, wanted her to stay with them.”

“Isn’t she, like, ten?”

“She’s thirteen now, and their nanny is there. Whit’s been pregnant for, like, a decade, and she wanted to have a drink with the team after the game. You up for that?”

“Where is everyone going?”

“I think your friend’s place, O’Donnell’s.” She pulls down the visor and applies lipstick.

“Yeah, sounds good.” And I bet Chuck Turner will be there. I laugh to myself.

“We know you have to work tomorrow, so it won’t be late. They have games all week, so just one drink and we’re out,” Danny says as he pulls out onto the road.

I grin as I tap out a text to the girls.
