I nod. “We made good memories there.”

“Chocolate ice cream and potato chip sundaes.”

Cora looks back. “Please tell me there’s more.”

Chloe lights up. “Of course there’s more. I’ll get?—”

“I got it.” I scoot off the couch. “Cora needs more Chloe time. Danny, you want some?”

“I can help.” He starts to get up.

“No, watch the game. I got it.”

As I’m putting the sundaes together, I hear Cora ask her when they’ll be coming to Trenton again and if she would meet her father.

Chloe answers, “I’d be honored.”

“Awesome.”

“Tell me about school,” Chloe says.

“I’m looking at vet schools.”

God, I love her.

“CeCe, wake up.”

“Chloe?” I rub my eyes. “What time is it?”

“Time to wake up. We need to get to Trenton, okay?”

“What’s wrong?” I ask, sitting up.

“They got him.”

I slide off the bed and see her eyes are red. “Chloe, what happened?”

“Gwen …” Tears begin to fall. “Gwen’s in surgery and?—”

“Come on, ladies. Francesca’s family jet is waiting.” Danny nods to the door with Aggie sleeping on his shoulder.

I throw a sweatshirt on over my pajama top.

“I’m ready,” Cora says from the doorway.

“Let’s roll.” Danny walks out.

Knot in my stomach, I watch tears fall down Chloe’s face as she stands there, just looking at me while I pull on leggings. “And what else, Chloe?”

“Roman … he’s in the hospital, too.”

“Okay. All right,” I grab my crossbody and duffel and hurry out the door. “I need a phone; I need to talk to Marks.”

“Your phone is with your friends, right? Gwen”—her voice breaks—“she was worried WIlliam might have used something to track them.”

I walk back and take her hand. “I need Danny’s phone. I need to talk to Marks. He’ll know more.”
