Pope leans over. “She ran track in high school.”

“How the hell do you know that?” I ask.

Leland chuckles. “We know every sport any of them ever played. Zandor was best at baseball, but he was more interested in flipping skirts.”

“That’s rich,” Gwen says, and we all look over as she takes a drink.

“That some passive-aggressive dig at me, Gwendolyn?”

She looks at Pope. “Tell him to fuck off.”

Smirking, he looks at Leland. “York says to fuck off.”

“Thanks. I didn’t catch that.”

Two runs are all that are scored, but that’s all that needs to be, in my opinion, because Cecilia Shaw is having a fucking blast.

The game ends in a tie.

Packing up gear, Amias walks over.

“You were wrong, man.”

“How’s that?” he asks.

“I could sit on those bleachers all day, every day, and watch them play.”

Coming up beside me, Abe asks, “Mission accomplished?”

I zip up the bat bag and stand. “Yeah. Yours?”

He chuckles. “Been too damn long.”

“Talk to Zandor and Jase. They tossed around fall ball during the offseason at Revolutionary Field. Ticket sales go to the winning team’s charity of choice, I think.”

Amias whistles loudly, gaining everyone’s attention. “The game was tied. I could hand back Benjamins, or we could leave your bets in a pot for the next game.”

“You placed bets on the game?” Gwen huffs. “I want names of who bet against, um …” She looks at the girls. “What’s our team name?”

“Powder Puffs,” Locke suggests through a laugh.

She looks at Pope, brow arched, and he looks at Locke. “York says to fuck off.”

Still Thursday

“Sorry,” CeCe whispers as she gets out of the minivan.

“Don’t be. You’ve had a lot going on. They missed you, you missed them, and I’m sure you have a lot to talk about before you head to Walton, yeah?” I ask as Elle tugs on her leash.

“Yeah. About that, I should have said something.”

I nod to the backyard. “Gotta walk Elle, but until you call me yours, you don’t owe me shit.”

Walking beside me, she says, “It’s our date night.”

“Plans can change based on need, Cecilia Ruth Shaw.”
