You think I’m taking you on our first date that’s being chaperoned in that truck? I’m wounded, Red.
Laughing, I hit the turn signal and swing right into her driveway. I see the four of them on the porch, waiting, and slow down so they can get the full effect of this moment. Elle’s in the front passenger seat, head out the window. The song “Cecilia” is cranked on the radio, and I watch all four of them start laughing—Cecilia so hard that she has her hands on her belly as I roll all the way to the end of her driveway, do a three-point turn, drive up, and throw it in park.
I unhook Elle’s safety belt, and we get out so she can do her business. I laugh along with the four of them.
Gwen takes her leash, and I head right for CeCe, singing along with the song. That smile—fuck, that smile is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I’d fucking die for that smile.
I hold my hand out. Shaking her head, she takes it. I twirl her around, pull her into me, hold her close, and sway to the music.
When the song ends, I lean down, kiss her cheek, and whisper, “I’m all in, all yours. You let me know when I can call you mine.”
Her hand on my belly, she leans back and looks up at me. I’m not sure what she’s thinking, but when her eyes sparkle in the sun, I know something unexpected is coming.
“How did we go from you being fucked up on me to all in?”
I can’t help but laugh as I tell her, “Who knows, Cecilia Juliette Shaw?” She scrunches up her nose, and I shrug, conceding, as I continue, “I mean, how did I go from a kick-ass Chevy truck to the ultimate first-date vehicle?”
