“You’re okay. When I dove…I didn’t know if that would work. I mean—Wait. Shit. Nicholas was still up. How did you get out?”

The sound of Billie’s light laughter soothed every ache and pain festering in my bones. I’d nearly watched her die, but she was here—right beside me and okay.

“Nicholas always did like to hear himself talk. I got lucky. While he was droning on about how I’d fallen from grace by falling for you, I made my way to your gun.”

I nodded, vaguely remembering gesturing at it. But it was like recalling a dream, all fuzzy and choppy at the edges.

“Right, I…” I looked at her with a smirk, cocking my brow. “Falling for me, huh?”

Billie rolled her eyes with a grin as she took my hand again. “I think you’re aware of that by now, aren’t you?”

I hummed, nodding ever so slightly. “Maybe. But it can’t hurt to remind me. I was out for a while after all.”

“It’s actually just been a few hours,” Parker said.

Turning toward her again, I looked up into her face, furrowing my brow. “And who are you again?”

She scowled at me, clearing her throat before she stepped away from the bed and headed for the exit. When she was just at the door, Parker waved her hand back toward us and left the room with one final word of warning.

“Don’t let him get carried away. He’s still recovering.”

I just laughed, but Billie lowered her chin, pulling into herself as she regarded me.

“Get carried away? What does she mean?”

Pulling Billie onto my lap in the bed, I grunted as my shoulder throbbed, shaking my head to refocus on the luscious ass that was right over my dick.

“I think she means, don’t let me fuck you right away, but I’m sure I’ll manage.”

Giggles bled into moans as I claimed Billie’s mouth, exploring with my tongue before nibbling on her full bottom lip. She leaned into me, a gentle hum slipping free as she circled her hips over my lap. I was so damn ready for her, my cock aching to feel how we were both very much alive.

But then she sat back.

“What is it, sweetheart? I promise you, I can find a way to do this without using that arm much.”

Billie shook her head, a short laugh cutting through the air. “It’s not that.”

I took her face in my hands, holding her stare with my own.

“Then what, baby? I’m right here.”

Her eyes went glassy as another hard cut of laughter sounded. “That’s just it, isn’t it? You almost weren’t. Parker had to give you bags and bags of blood. You were totally out of it while she stitched you up, and I didn’t…I didn’t know if you were going to be okay. I thought I lost you more than once.”

Pulling her against my chest, I held her tight. Feeling her heartbeat so strongly against my pec.

“I’m okay, love. I’m not leaving you. Ever.”

Her fingers gripped the thin hospital gown I wore, one of several we’d stolen so that Parker would have something to put us all in.

“You better fucking not. I don’t want to go back to before. I don’t. I want to…” She sucked in a breath, and I could hear the tears where I couldn’t see them. “I want to be here—with you. Just like you said. I said this when you were sleeping, or you know, unconscious. I came up with an entire plan to make this work.”

Lifting her chin so that I could meet her eyes, I smiled. “Oh yeah? And what plan is that? I’m all ears.”

“I’ll stay here, quit the firm, and live with you. I mean, Nicholas is dead, after all, and that…changes things. Not just who I’m working for. I killed him. I didn’t even flinch. I still…I still don’t feel bad about it. Not really. He…he was going to kill you, and I won’t fucking have anyone thinking they can take the man I love from me.”

My mouth fell open slightly, my heart kicking a dropped beat into my ribs with the force of a cannon blast. Had she said…

“Did you say love?” I zeroed in on Billie, hanging on the space between us as I waited for her response.
