But even as I think it, I know I never could have done that.

I was born for this, and I’ll kill anyone who tries to stand in my way.

CHAPTER FIFTY

CREW

There was a moment when I watched Camilla’s strength flicker and doubt creep in as we tore out of the docks heading back toward the city, but it was replaced almost immediately by a version of her I hadn’t seen from her before.

Cool. Detached. Ruthless.

She rolls down the window without a word and sticks her arm out, shooting off a few shots at the cars behind us. I’m about to tell her to try to take out the tires when she does exactly that, causing one of the two SUVs behind us to spin out of control, leaving us with just one to shake off.

Why the hell was that so hot?

“Hold on,” I bark at her a second before I take a left turn too quickly, causing the tires to squeal as they struggle to find traction. This is hardly the first car chase I’ve been a part of, but this is different. I have precious cargo this time, and if I don’t bring her home in one piece, it’ll be my head.

Camilla glances over at me with mischief dancing in her eyes. What the fuck is she planning? I never get the chance to ask before she hits the seat belt release, and a second later, she’s leaning out the window.

“Camilla, get the fuck back in here,” I snap as I reach for the belt loops of her jeans, but she reaches further out the window, pulling herself from my reach.

I curse and grip onto her knee for dear life as I take another corner, making sure not to throw her out of the car in the process. She’s in so much fucking trouble when we get to the safe house.

Even if we can shake this tail, we have no fucking clue who set this trap for Camilla. She’s not short on enemies right now, and even though I should be impartial to this entire situation, I’m not.

Once we get to safety and I punish her for putting herself in danger, I’m going to have to figure out how we’re going to go forward with her as one of the bosses and us in our current position. Because it’s only a matter of time before the other leaders start catching on to our protection extending to only Camilla.

“Fuck,” she cries out, and my heart lurches painfully in my chest at the sound a second before she drops back into the car, clutching her arm.

“Please don’t tell me you just got yourself shot?” I growl through clenched teeth.

Her gray eyes flick to mine, and a smirk tips up her lips. “Okay, I won’t tell you that.”

This fucking woman. She’s going to put me in an early grave if she keeps this shit up.

I growl when another bullet hits the back bumper. They’re trying to blow out our tires, and if we don’t shake them soon, we’re going to be in trouble.

“Should I call Bishop for backup?” she asks, clutching her arm as she reaches for her phone.

“No. By the time he got here, it would be too late anyway.”

She shoots me a worried look but grasps the gun back in her hand, ready for whatever might come next.

I’m so focused on the SUV behind us that I almost miss the one that screams out of a side street, cutting us off and forcing me to slam my foot on the brake.

“Crew?”

“It’s okay,” I tell her as I assess the situation. One in front of us, one behind. There’s a side street a few yards away I could take if I jump the medium strip. But bullets at such close range could take out the tires.

I consider our options for another few beats before I grasp Camilla’s hand in mine and force her attention to me. “We’re going to run.”

Her brows shoot up, but she nods quickly.

“See that alley there?”

She nods.

“We’re going to make a break for it down there. We’re three blocks from the safe house, but we’ll need to shake them before we can enter. Okay?”
